Buddhism in Germany Today
05.11.2019

by Most Venerable Thich Nhu Dien, Vice President of WBSC (World Buddhist Shanga Council)

Germany, the land of many talents.

In the last 200 years the world has witnessed many contribution in areas of science, literature, philosophy and humanity social science in Germany.

Starting with a philosopher named, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) who demonstrated through his writings and showed his admiration for Buddhist views. Maybe he was the pionier of Buddhist philosophy and science in Germany. After his works there were hundreds of scholars researches manifested in the area of Buddhist studies and Buddhist contribution in other humanity areas like Hermann Hesse (1877–1962), Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), Paul Dankel (1895-1963) and last but not least Albert Einstein (1879–1955) with his famous Theory of Relativity. Albert Einstein made a famous remark to highlight a buddhist role in the modern society.

Nowadays, more than 800 buddhist centers are located in Germany. Approximately 20 of them are vietnamese descendants. Nyanaponika Mahathera (1901-1994) has translated the whole Pali Tipitaka into the German language. The translations of the Pali Kanons helps many Buddhist seekers who have difficulties with ancient languages. There are around 500 thousands buddhists who have taken refuge into the Triple Gems and 13 million vegetarian living people in Germany. It's the world biggest vegetarian country in compare to the proportion of the total population.

Christian Catholics and Protestants are the traditional believers of this country, but in the last years they see many followers deserting. Not all of them are turning into the view of buddhist religion, science or philosophy. Nevertheless nowadays, you can observe big movements and seekings into alternativ spiritual paths.

Our Sangha members need to unite and work harder for the next generations of Buddhists and alternative seekers.

Sincerely with blessed Dharma greetings,

Buddhismus in Deutschland heute                                                                     05.11.2019
