THƠ CA (POEMS)

Song of the Buddha Mind

Buddha! Buddha! Buddha! Impossible to be seen!
Mind! Mind! Mind! Impossible to be told!

When the mind arises, Buddha is born.
When Buddha is gone, the mind vanishes.
There is never a place where the mind is gone while Buddha remains.
There is never a time when Buddha is gone while the mind remains.
If you want to understand the mind of Buddha, and the mind of birth and death, just wait for Maitreya and ask him.

There was no mind anciently; there is no Buddha now.
All unenlightened beings, holy beings, human beings, heavenly beings are just like flashes of lightning.
The mind nature is neither right nor wrong.
The Buddha nature is neither real nor unreal.

1
PHẬT TÂM CA

Phật! Phật! Phật! Không thể thấy
Tâm! Tâm! Tâm! Không thể nói.

Nếu khi tâm sanh là Phật sanh
 Nếu khi Phật diệttâm diệt
Diệt tâm còn Phật chuyện không đâu
Diệt Phật còn tâm khi nào hết?
Muốn biết Phật tâm, sanh diệt tâm
Đợi đến sau này Di-lặc quyết.

Xưa không tâm, nay không Phật
Phàm, Thánh, người, trời như điện chớp.
Tâm thể không thị cũng không phi
Phật tánh chẳng hư cũng chẳng thật.

Suddenly arising, suddenly ceasing,
anciently leaving, now coming,
you all waste your time with thinking and discussing.
In that way, you would bury the Vehicle of the Patriarchs,
and cause the devils to hound in the house.

If you want to find the mind, stop searching outward.
The nature of the mind is naturally still and void.
Nirvana and the birth-death cycles are illusionary shackles.
The fetters and Enlightenment are hollow oppositions.

The mind is Buddha; Buddha is the mind.
That profound meaning shines bright since endless time.
When spring comes, the spring flowers blossom naturally.
When autumn comes, the autumn waters reflects the sorrow clearly.

Removing the false mind while keeping the true nature
is like searching for the reflections while missing the mirror.
You don’t know that reflections come from the mirror,
and that the false appear from the truth.
That the false come is neither real nor unreal.
That the mirror reflects is neither wrong nor right.

Bỗng dưng dấy, bỗng dưng dừng
Xưa qua nay lại luống nghĩ bàn.
Đâu chỉ chôn vùi thừa Tổ tông
Lại khiến yêu ma nhà mình lộng.

Muốn tìm tâm, đừng tìm ngoài
Bản thể như nhiên tự rỗng lặng.
Niết-bàn sanh tử buộc ràng suông
Phiền não Bồ-đề đối địch rỗng.

Tâm tức Phật, Phật tức tâm
Diệu chỉ sáng ngời suốt cổ kim
Xuân đến, tự nhiên hoa xuân nở
Thu về, hiện rõ nước thu sâu.

Bỏ vọng tâm, giữ chân tánh
Như người tìm bóng mà quên kính.
Đâu biết bóng có từ nơi gương
Chẳng rõ vọng từ trong chân hiện.
Vọng đến không thật cũng không hư
Gương nhận không cong cũng không thẳng.

There is neither sinfulness nor blessedness.
Don’t mistake wish-fulfilling gem for white jewel.
Gems could have scratches; Jewels, defects.
The mind nature is neither rosy nor green, and neither gained nor lost.
Seven times seven is forty-nine.
The six perfections and the ten thousand conducts are waves on the ocean;
The three poisons and the nine kinds of sentient beings, suns in the sky.

Be still, be still, be still; Go down, go down, go down.
The essence of all phenomena is the Buddha mind.
The Buddha mind and your mind are one.
Such is, naturally, the profound meaning since endless time.

Walk in Zen, sit in Zen, then you will see the lotus blooming in fire.
When your will becomes weak, just strengthen it.
When your place is peaceful and suitable, just stay there.

Cũng không tội, cũng không phước
Lầm sánh ma-ni cùng bạch ngọc
Ngọc có vết chừ châu có tỳ
Tánh vốn không hồng cũng không lục.
Cũng không được, cũng không mất.
Bảy lần bảy là bốn mươi chín.
Tam độc cửu tình nhật trong không
Lục độ vạn hạnh sóng trên biển.

Lặng, lặng, lặng, chìm, chìm, chìm
Cái tâm muôn pháp là tâm Phật
Tâm Phật lại cùng tâm ta hợp
Lẽ ấy như nhiên suốt cổ kim

Đi cũng thiền, ngồi cũng thiền
Trong lò lửa rực, một hoa sen
Ý khí mất thì thêm ý khí
Được nơi an tiện hãy an tiện.

Ah ah ah! Oh oh oh!
Sunken or floating, bubbles on the ocean are all empty.
All deeds are impermanent; All phenomena are void.
Where can you find the sacred bones of your late master?

Be mindful, be mindful, be awake; Be awake, be mindful, be mindful.
Keep four corners in contact with the ground; don’t let things tilt.
If someone here trusts like that,
he can start walking from the crown of Vairocana Buddha.
Shout!

Chao! Chao! Chao! Ối! Ối! Ối!
Bọt trong biển cả nổi chìm rỗng.
Các hạnh vô thường tất cả không
Linh cốt Tiên sư chỗ nào thấy?

Tỉnh tỉnh thức, thức tỉnh tỉnh
Bốn góc đạp đất chớ chinh nghiêng.
Người nào nơi đây tin được đến
Trên đảnh Tỳ-lô cất bước đi
 Hét!

A Song of Crazy Freedom

Holding a staff, traveling through distant scenes,
and glancing at the sky and earth, I see the vastness out there.

Oh so high is the cloud in mountain.
Oh so deep is the water in ocean.

When hungry, I eat the rice given from ten directions.
When tired, I sleep at unfamiliar places.

When inspired, I play the holeless flute.
When calm, I burn the incense of liberation.

When weary, I take a rest at the blissful land.
When thirsty, I drink fully the medication of leasure travel.

Qui Son, my neighbor, is taming a water buffalo.
Ta Tam, in the same boat with me, is singing a song of fishermen.

Khát uống no chừ thang tiêu dao

Qui Sơn láng giềng chừ chăn con trâu nước
Tạ Tam đồng thuyền chừ hát khúc Thương Lang.

Visiting Tao Khe, I meet with Hue Nang.
Coming to Thach Dau, I see myself equal to Layman Pang.

Joyful I am – just like Bo Dai was joyful.
Crazy I am – just like Pho Hoa was crazy.

Ah ah, wealth and fame are just clouds floating away.
Oh oh, time is flying fast, its shade passing through window.

So rough is a mandarin’s career -- why enter?
So hot and cold is human attitude – why endure?

If it’s deep, pull up your clothes; if shallow, raise your feet.
If using, just come out; if dropping, just go hiding.

Throw out the four elements; grasp nothing.
Awake from this life; stop running around.

Thăm Tào Khê chừ chào Lư Thị
Viếng Thạch Đầu chừ sánh lão Bàng.

Vui ta vui chừ Bố Đại vui
Cuồng ta cuồng chừ Phổ Hóa cuồng.

Chao! Chao! Chừ giàu sang mây nổi
Năm tháng chừ cửa sổ ngựa qua.

Đi càn chừ đường quan hiểm trở
Chịu sao chừ ấm lạnh tình đời.

Sâu thì xắn chừ cạn thì vén.
Dùng thì hành chừ bỏ thì tàng.

Buông bốn đại chừ đừng nắm bắt
Tỉnh một đời chừ thôi chạy quàng.

I have my vows done; I have what I want.
Despite birth and death are fighting each other, I have gone beyond them all.

Thỏa nguyện ta chừ được sở thích
Sống chết bức nhau chừ nơi ta ngại gì?

At Ease with Birth and Death

When the mind arises, birth and death arise;
when the mind vanishes, birth and death vanish.
Originally emptiness – birth and death in nature are void.
Illusionary manifestation – this unreal body is being gone.
When you see affliction and bodhi fading,
hell and heaven will themselves wither,
the fire oven and the boiling oil will cool soon,
and the mountain of knives and the tree of swords will break up all.
The hearers meditate; I don’t.
The bodhisattvas give dharma talks; I tell the truth.

Life is itself illusionary, and so is death.
The four elements are originally empty; where did they emerge from?
Don’t behave like a thirsty deer chasing the mirage,
and searching east then west endlessly.
The Dharma Body neither comes nor goes;
the True Nature is neither right nor wrong.
After arriving home, you should not ask for the way anymore.
After seeing the moon, you need not to look for the finger.
The unenlightened persons erroneously fear of birth and death.
The enlightened have fully insight, and live at ease.

Sống Chết Nhàn Mà Thôi

Tâm mà sanh chừ sanh tử sanh
Tâm mà diệt chừ sanh tử diệt.
Sanh tử xưa nay tự tánh không
Thân huyễn hóa này rồi sẽ diệt.
Phiền não Bồ-đề thầm tiêu mòn
Địa ngục thiên đường tự khô kiệt.
Lò lửa dầu sôi chóng mát lành
Cây kiếm núi đao liền gãy hết.
Thanh văn ngồi thiền, ta không ngồi
Bồ-tát nói pháp, ta nói thật

Sống tự dối sống, chết dối chết
Bốn đại vốn không, từ đâu khởi.
Chớ như nai khát đuổi sóng nắng
Chạy đông tìm tây không tạm nghỉ.
Pháp thân không đến cũng không đi
Chân tánh không phải cũng không quấy.
Đến nhà, nên biết thôi hỏi đường
Thấy trăng, đâu nhọc tìm tay ấy.
Kẻ ngu điên đảo sợ sống chết
Người trí thấy suốt nhàn thôi vậy.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

4
Holy or Unholy, No Difference

Emerging from the formless, your body is originally emptiness.
The illusion is manifested and scattered, giving dualistic views.

The self and others are like dew, like fog.
The holy and unholy are like lightning, like flash.
Position, fame, wealth and honor are like clouds floating away.
Your life, days and months are like arrows flying fast.

When a tiny feeling of like or dislike flashes in your mind,
you get all things wrong, just like throwing away flour while searching for cake.
Eyebrows are horizontal, nose is vertical – no difference.
Buddha and sentient beings have one same face.

Who is holy, and who is unholy?
Seeking those in countless lives, you have drifted so far away from the self-nature.
There is not a mind that is neither right nor wrong.
There is not a view that is neither wicked nor righteous.

 PHÀM THÁNH KHÔNG HAI

Thân từ vô tướng xưa nay không
Huyễn hóa phân chia thành nhị kiến

Ta, người như móc cũng như sương,
Phàm, Thánh như sấm cũng như chớp.
Công danh phú quí đồng mây trôi
Năm tháng đời người dường tên bắn.

Chút tình thương ghét chợt dấy lên
Khác nào bỏ bột đi tìm bánh.
Mày ngang mũi dọc cũng như nhau
Phật với chúng sanh không khác mặt.

Ai là phàm chừ ai là Thánh
Nhiều kiếp kiếm tìm không căn tánh
Không tâm chẳng thị cũng chẳng phi,
Chẳng kiến không tà cũng không chánh.

Butcher Quang Ngach* had the wish fulfilled,
being born as a son of Celestial King Vaisravana.
Monk Ananda completed the recitation, the holy feat of merit and virtue.

Enlighten yourself, enlighten others, and lighten the way.
Make the world become clear and cool, and put out the heat and disease.

Don’t you see that?
Who was the person that died in the past?
Who is the person that is living now?
Their two minds are different but in the same one stream.
Ultimately, eighty-four thousand Dharma gates all lead to the realization of Buddha Mind, which is like a vast mirror encompassing all things.

Shout!

(NOTES. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra tells the story of Quang Ngach, a butcher who encountered Sariputra, received and kept the eight precepts for a day and a night, and then took rebirth as a son of Celestial King Vaisravana.)

Đồ tể Quảng Ngạch thành nguyện vương
Tỳ-kheo Khánh Hỷ công đức thánh.
Tự giác giác tha độ đường mê
Khắp cõi mát lành không nóng bức
Anh thấy chăng
Người mất trước đó là ai?
Người được sau đó là ai?
Hai tâm sai khác một dòng mạng.
Rốt cuộc vào tám muôn bốn ngàn pháp môn đà-la-ni.
Đồng nhiếp vào gương trí rộng lớn tròn đầy Như Lai.

Chao!

5
Ignorance and Enlightenment, No Difference

When ignorant, you see emptiness and form appear.
When enlightened, you see form and emptiness vanish.
Form, emptiness, ignorance and enlightenment
are just one same principle, even anciently and now.

When the false thoughts rise, the three hells appear.
When the true mind is realized, the five kinds of eyes open.
The mind of Nirvana is serene, serene.
The sea of birth and death is stormy, stormy.

There is neither birth nor death.
There is neither beginning nor end.
Just throw away the dualistic views,
you will see all things are intertwining without distinction.

(NOTES. The three hells: the hell of fire, the hell of blood, and the hell of swords.
The five kinds of eyes: human eyes, deva eyes, wisdom eyes, dharma eyes, and Buddha eyes.)

5
MÊ NGỘ KHÔNG KHÁC

Mê đi sanh không sắc
Ngộ lại chẳng sắc không
Sắc không mê ngộ ấy,
Một lý xưa nay đồng.

Vọng dấy tam đồ dấy
Chân thông ngũ nhãn thông.
Niết-bàn tâm vắng lặng
Sanh tử biển trùng trùng

Chẳng sanh lại chẳng diệt
Không thủy cũng không chung.
Chỉ hay quên nhị kiến
Pháp giới thảy bao dung
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

(GHI CHÚ. Tam đồ: địa ngục lửa, địa ngục máu, và địa ngục đao kiếm.
Ngũ nhãn: nhục nhãn, thiên nhãn, huệ nhãn, pháp nhãn, và Phật nhãn.)

Song for the Pursed Lips

That is wrong if you say there’s a thing anciently and now.
That is right if you say the body is born and burdened with karma.
The five aggregates are bobbing around,
because the four elements are clinging together.
Born in this life, despite being short or tall,
everyone suffers from birth, aging, sickness and death.

Human has a time for success, and a time for failure;
Flower, a time for blossom, and a time for withering;
Nation, a time for rise, and a time for decline;
Destiny, a time for gain, and a time of loss;
Day, a time for dawn, and a time for sunset;
Year, a time for beginning, and a time for end.

Throw away all them – the wealth, fame, and nobility.
Retreat for the way, retreat to a forest or a mountain.

6
Ngâm Bĩu Môi

Xưa nay một vật chừ cũng sai,
Thân sanh mang nghiệp chừ cũng phải.
Vì sao ngũ uẩn chừ lăng xăng
Bám chặt tứ đại chừ nương tựa.
Bỗng có cao thấp chừ ngắn dài
Tự chịu sanh già chừ bệnh chết.

Người có thạnh chừ thì có suy
Hoa có tươi chừ thì có héo.
Nước có hưng chừ thì có vong.
Thời có thái chừ thì có bĩ.
Ngày có chiều chừ thì có mai
Năm có chung chừ thì có thủy.

Trở về ẩn đạo chừ núi rừng
Nguội lạnh lợi danh chừ triều thị.

The man who sat nine years in Thieu That had the same mind with me.
The man who received dharma transmission at Hoang Mai midnight made me his confidant.
In accord with circumstances, I raise the eyebrows with Lien Xa.
Having high aim, I hear Trieu Chau pat the teeth.

Before words spoken, I already understand and nod my head.
Still in hiding, I live just like toes wiggling inside shoes,
like an awl in pocket away from the fire kiln,
and like a hungry, strong tiger not glancing at the preys.

A bright jewel that has the power to calm the sea
worries not about the waves and winds,
and that has the true color
worries not about the color of purple or pink.

Coming there, you will see appearance and essence shining bright;
You’re then free to grasp or drop, having not a thought in mind.
The stone ox enters the East Sea at midnight,
stirring up coral reefs
and seeing the moon becoming one with water.

(NOTES.
- Thieu That (Shao Shi): the mountain in China where Bodhidharma silently sat for nine years in the early sixth century.

- Hoang Mai (Huangmei): the Sixth Patriarch Hue Nang received dharma transmission at a monastery in Hoang Mai Mountain in the seventh century.

- Lien Xa: the Lotus Society in fourth century China, following the Pure Land School.

- stone ox: symbolizing the unborn mind.)

Đến đây rồi chừ sự lý toàn bày
Cầm giữ, buông bỏ chừ đâu cần nghĩ ngợi
Trâu đá giữa đêm vào biển đông
Càn ngã san-hô, trăng như nước.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

(Ghi chú.
- Thiếu Thất: ngọn núi ở Trung Quốc, nơi Bồ Đề Đạt Ma ngồi lặng lẽ chín năm hồi đầu thế kỷ thứ sáu.

- Hoàng Mai: Lục Tổ Huệ Năng được truyền pháp tại một tự viện ở núi Hoàng Mai thế kỷ thứ bảy.

- Liên Xã: một hội ở Trung Quốc thế kỷ thứ tư, theo tông Tịnh Độ.

- trâu đá: biểu tượng cho tâm vô sanh.)

Self Warning

Days and months, just like water flowing.
Wealth and power, just like cloud floating.

After the wind and fire shatter apart,
the young and old will all become dust.
After the souls and spirits* dissolve away from the form,
body is just like a dream.

Earning a living tosses you daily like a spinning top,
and throws you onstage to keep catching the shadows.

After the red-crowned crane landed in the royal garden and
was named as Cuu Cao Literator, it still is red-crowned.
After the red-tailed fish jumped over
the Vu Mon Gate to become a dragon, it still has the red tail.

Why don’t you turn your head, reflect inwardly, be in accord with the mind essence, and enlighten the conscioussness?
Just step into the path of liberation, complete the perfection of wisdom, and live in normal life with pure mind and its profound manifestations.

Bài Văn Trữ Từ Tự Răn

Ngày tháng nước chảy
Giàu sang mây trôi.

Gió lửa tan rồi
Trẻ già thành bụi.
Hồn phách lìa, sắc thân như mộng

Cuộc mưu sinh, con rối kéo lôi,
Hằng ngày đùa, đưa tay bắt bóng.

Hạc cửu cao đầu đỏ có thừa
Cá vũ môn đuôi hồng chẳng đổi.

Chẳng quay đầu, hồi quang phản chiếu
Hợp tâm yếu, thức tánh thông minh
Cầu giải thoát, chánh giác viên thành
Nơi trần tục, tâm thanh diệu dụng

In dreams, things are made;
When awakened, you see all things are truly emptiness.
In dreams, scenes come up, rough and smooth;
When awakened, you see not even a strand of hair or silk.

The pure mind has neither spot nor blemish.
The enduring body has neither past nor future.

Colors of the spring flowers all radiate beautifully.
Images of the autumn moon all are perfectly round.

When thoughts of holy and unholy tie you up,
you go against the truth.
When not a trace of birth and death clings in your mind,
you will suddenly realize the original nature.

When a flash of sensation comes up, the three hells appear.
When a tiny thought arises, the six paths* follow.

From the flow of the seven consciousnesses*, like and dislike feelings emerge.
From the destruction of the three poisons*, neither true nor false exists.

Trong mộng tạo tác
Thức rồi đều không.
Trong mộng tạo, sanh thô sanh tế
Tỉnh giấc rồi, không mảy tóc kẽ tơ.

Tâm thanh tịnh chẳng nhơ chẳng bợn
Thân kiên cố không trước không sau.

Sắc xuân hoa đóa đóa tươi hồng
Trăng thu bóng tròn tròn viên diệu

Buộc niệm phàm thánh
Chỉ hiềm là trái hẳn tướng chân.
Lòng quên tử sanh
Liền liễu ngộ xưa nay tánh thật.

Còn mảy tình tam đồ báo ứng
Tơ hào niệm lục đạo tiếp nhân.
Tùy bảy thức có chán có ưa
Phá ba độc không chân không vọng.

Clinging to the image of a self or of a person is very hard to be tamed,
tossing you into the four forms of birth endlessly.
The three poisons of desire, hatred and ignorance draw you into fighting,
flushing you into the nine kinds of birth continuously.

If you follow the ignorance, you will waste this body of the four elements.
If you skillfully transform the impure organs of sense, you will enter the samadhi of True Suchness.

Dualistic views are upside-down, throwing nets in high mountains to try to catch fish.
One suchness is serene and extinguishing, being realized by one who rides donkey backward to the shore of enlightenment.

If your mind is not partial, you are unmoved despite all malicious attacks.
When others malign you, it’s just like they start a wood fire to try to burn the sky;
You see that and feel pathetic toward them.

Tướng nhân ngã khó thâu khó nhiếp
Kiếp hà sa luân hồi tứ sanh
Tham sân si cùng đấu cùng tranh
Số tăng-kỳ lang thang chín loại.

Nhận hướng theo khuôn phép vô minh
Luống uổng mất sắc thân tứ đại
Khéo chuyển đổi các căn hữu lậu
Liền chứng vào chánh định chân như

Điên đảo nhị kiến
Là đem lưới bủa cá đầu non.
Tịch diệt nhất như
Cỡi ngược lừa tiến lên bờ giác.

Trong lòng nếu không thiên không đảng
Tai mặc nghe người mắng người chê,
Cầm lửa đốt trời luống tự nhọc
Mắt được thấy là xót là thương.

Killing false thoughts to search for one suchness
is like shouting loud to try pressing down the echoes.
Dropping affliction to search for nirvana
is like running into the sunshine to hide away from the fearful shadows.

You have no way to escape the shackles of fame and wealth, if your mind jumps like a restless monkey and your thoughts gallop like a wild horse.
You will enjoy the freedom away from mistreatment by the Hell Deity, if you return to the place of enlightenment.

Always see the impermanence is flowing swiftly,
never have a step backward, and finally triumph over the six outlaws.
Ignite in your mind the fire of right concentration to burn all afflictions,
and realize the complete nirvana.

If you want to net a phoenix, don’t follow the flight of sparrows.
Now you want to hook a shark, don’t mind about the toads.

Cầu chân nhưđoạn vọng niệm
Dường la to để át tiếng vang
Bỏ phiền não mà giữ Niết-bàn
Tợ sợ bóng chạy vào nắng trốn.

Chợt vậy theo tâm viên ý mã
Khó tránh khỏi lợi buộc danh ràng.
Không quay về Tổ vức đạo tràng
Đâu tránh khỏi Diêm vương ngục tốt

Đem bốn chữ “vô thường nhanh chóng”
Không thối chuyển, sáu giặc dẹp yên.
Nhóm lửa hồng chánh định đốt tiêu,
Chứng vào được Vô dư Niết-bàn.

Giăng lưới lớn bủa bắt phượng hoàng
Chớ buông chí theo loài chim sẻ
Nay muốn câu cá ngạc cá kình
Đừng bận bịu ễnh ương ếch nhái.

With palms folded together respectfully,
I offer this poem to dharma brothers and everyone,
for each of us in the human realm is already divine and holy.
Please read and go forward.

Shout!

(NOTES:
- souls and spirits: many Vietnamese in the old time believed that every human had three ethereal spirits and seven corporeal spirits. Tue Trung Thuong Sy sometimes wrote with words familiar to his readers in daily life, and then showed the Way of Buddhism with his own poetic style.

- six paths: six directions of reincarnation – hell-dwellers, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, human beings, and heavenly beings.

- seven consciousnesses: the perceptions of sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, discriminating thoughts, and self-grasping mind.

- three poisons: desire, hatred, and ignorance.

- four forms of birth: birth from the womb, the egg, the moisture, transformation.

- nine kinds of birth: birth from the womb, the egg, the moisture, transformation; born into heavens of form, of non-form, of thought, of non-thought, of neither thought nor non-thought.)

The Weather

Don’t ask where birth and death come from.
In accord with causative factors, the weather takes shape naturally.
The clouds over mountain must form as the mountain peaks.
The water flowing over bedrock slabs can not make the sound of waterfall.
Following the spring every year, flowers smile.
Greeting the dawn every morning, roosters crow.
One who realizes the face of mother will understand
that heavenly and human beings are all false names.

THỜI TIẾT AN ĐỊNH

Sanh tử do đâu chớ hỏi han
Nhân duyên thời tiết tự nhiên thành.
Mây núi nào không thế mây núi
Nước khe đâu có tiếng đổ ghềnh.
Năm tháng hoa tùy xuân nở nụ
Đêm đêm gà gáy lúc canh năm.
Ai hay nhận được gương mặt mẹ
Mới hiểu trời người thảy giả danh.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Preserving the Truth

That is enough: My body is so frail.
That’s not about whether an old crane avoids flocks of chicken.
Thousands of blue, and ten thousands of green scenes
would lead you astray from the home country.
At a corner of the ocean and at an edge of the sky,
I am preserving the truth now.

9
DƯỠNG CHÂN

Thân hình suy yếu kể đủ chăng?
Hạc lão tránh gà việc chẳng can.
Ngàn xanh muôn tía lầm hương quốc
Góc biển chân trời để dưỡng chân.

Entering the Dust Realm

With the golden light shimmering on eyelashes,
I stride into the dust realm,
playfully at times jump into a horse’s womb in a northern village,
and at times enter a donkey’s fetus at an eastern house.
Once in a while, I swing the gilded staff to chase away the mud ox,
or throw the iron chain to subdue the stone tiger.
Some day, frost and ice will melt away,
and then hundreds of flowers will bloom again.

VÀO CÁT BỤI

Xăm xăm cất bước vào bụi đời
Vàng óng đầu mi, mở khơi khơi.
Xóm bắc rong chơi vào bụng ngựa
Nhà đông cười nói nhập thai lừa.
Roi vàng đánh đuổi trâu đất chạy
Dây sắt lôi đầu cọp đá về.
Rồi một ngày mai băng giá hết
Trăm hoa như cũ rộn xuân đài.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

All Things Return to Suchness

Existence arises from emptiness, interconnecting with emptiness.
Existence and existence, emptiness and emptiness – all are the same.
Affliction and bodhi originally don’t differ from each other.
True suchness and false thoughts all are emptiness.
Your body is like a fake scene; and karma, like its shadow.
Your mind is like the wind; and nature of the mind, like grass ‘bong’ flying about in the wind.
Don’t ask about death, birth, devil and Buddha.
All stars point to the north, and all rivers flow to the east.

11
 MUÔN VIỆC VỀ NHƯ

Từ không hiện có, có không thông
Có có không không rốt cuộc đồng.
Phiền não Bồ-đề vốn chẳng khác
Chân như vọng niệm thảy đều không.
Thân như cảnh huyễn, nghiệp như bóng
Tâm tợ gió đưa, tánh tợ bồng.
Đừng hỏi tử sanh, ma với Phật
Các sao hướng bắc, nước về đông.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

12
Life is Illusionary

Forming, varying, and dissolving -- like clouds in the sky,
your whole life is just a dream.
The night dew washes summer away, and helps lotus budding.
The early wind carries spring along, and greets flower ‘mai’ blooming.
After the moon goes down behind the western mountains, its image vanishes.
Following the river to flow east to the sea, waves don’t turn back.
Once gathering in the yards of wealthy families,
the sparrows now scatter in all directions after all the wealth is gone --
You see that.

12
THÓI ĐỜI HƯ DỐI

Vân cẩu đổi thay lắm vẻ mà
Mơ màng gởi trọn giấc Nam Kha
Sương vừa rửa hạ, sen đang nụ
Gió mới mời xuân, mai đã hoa.
Trăng khuất núi tây, không còn bóng
Nước trôi đông hải, sóng đã qua.
Anh xem đàn én lầu Vương Tạ
Nay đến làm thân với mọi nhà.

Responding Poem to the District Chief

Although following the steps of Tu Minh Cuong,
I like both the Medicine King and the Devil King.
Living among the unlightened, be the true enlightened one;
Searching in the unthinkable realm, understand the profound mind.
The ignorant want to ask for the longevity medicine;
The wise don’t seek even the deathless drug.
The water is cold now: fish don’t seek food;
Then both fishing tackle and net are forgotten.

(NOTES. * After resigning as a mandarin in eighth-century China, Ha Tri Chuong took new name as Tu Minh Cuong, and retreated away from the crowds. Tue Trung, in this responding poem to the District Chief, explained why he had resigned as a governor.
* Buddha is also called as the Medicine King, who cures those suffering from desire, hatred and ignorance. The Devil King personifies the forces of desire, hatred and ignorance.)

Responding Poem to Hung Tri Thuong Vi Hau

The wind of Zen is neither preceding nor succeeding.
Original essence is suchness -- just suchness in nature.
In Thieu That Cave, Bodhidharma sat for nine years without a word.
At Hoang Mai midnight, the Fifth Patriarch symbolically gave dharma transmission to Hue Nang.
If your mind has no thought, don’t worry about the karma of speech anymore;
there is no need to choose among words.
Replying to the honorable lay leader Tran,
the night cry of a wild goose echoes through foggy skies.

14
HỌA THƠ HƯNG TRÍ THƯỢNG VỊ HẦU

Thiền phong không trước cũng không sau
Bản thể như như sẵn vậy nào.
Thiếu Thất chín năm không một tiếng
Hoàng Mai đêm giữa tạm riêng truyền.
Tâm cơ chẳng dính tơ hào niệm
Khẩu nghiệp nhọc gì chọn lựa lời.
Vì bảo Nguyên quân Trần Xử Sĩ
Nhạn khuya một tiếng, hết đêm mù.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Admiration for Tran Thanh Tong

He understands the heart of all Buddhist Scriptures in the Dragon Palace, and masters the Holy Teaching at high level, shining among the ancient and present.
His palm is open, and shows the jewel of Buddha mind.
His eyes pierce through deep water, seeing on the floor of ocean the needle – the Patriarch’s intention.

15
TỤNG ĐẠO HỌC TRẦN THÁNH TÔNG

Thánh học cao minh tột cổ kim
Kho rồng xâu suốt tận hoa tim.
Thích phong đã được mở tay báu
Tổ ý đâu không thấu kim chìm.

His wisdom surpasses the Zen gate, reaching to top of the Thieu That Mountain.
His compassion exceeds the ocean of scriptures, and threads through to Oai Am King*.
Worldly people only see that thousands of mountains are beautiful.
Who is listening to the monkey’s deep voice from deep caves?**

(NOTES.* Oai Am King (Sanskrit: Bhisma-garjita-ghosa-svara-raja) is the name of ancient Buddhas who existed before the universe was born. Oai Am King means the king with the awe-inspiring voice. Look around, and you could see that the world is born and reborn instantly and endlessly in front of your eyes: where is the ancient Buddha in front of your eyes?
** The mind is jumping around like a monkey, chattering and inviting affliction; however, when that monkey stops chattering, a profound voice should be heard.)

16
Taming the Mud Ox

I am all alone taming the mud ox,
pulling its nose string, and keeping it on the path constantly.
Coming to Tao Khe, I will set the ox free.
Do you see endless waves are traveling and rolling the round ball?

(NOTES. * The ox is a symbol for the mind. When the mud ox runs into a river and dissolves away, all thoughts vanish and the emptiness nature of the mind will be realized.)

16

17
Fond of Rivers and Lakes

My first love of travel over lakes and seas is still fresh.
Like an arrow and like a weaver’s shuttle, the days and months fly fast.
The cool wind and bright moon are enough for me to live.
I have so much with green mountains and blue waters here --
sailing a boat over rippling waves in the morning,
and playing a bamboo flute to breeze the fog in the afternoon.
There is not a trace now from Ta Tam,
who left only an empty boat on a ridge of sand.

17
VUI THÍCH GIANG HỒ

Tâm xưa hồ hải chửa từng khuây
Ngày tháng như tên dường tợ thoi.
Gió mát trăng thanh sanh kế đủ
Non xanh nước biếc nếp sống đầy.
Sáng sớm giương buồm băng nước thẳm
Chiều nâng sáo thổi cợt khói mây.
Tạ Tam nay đã không tin tức
Để chiếc thuyền trơ bãi cát này.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Something Unusable

Take off your clothes, if you live in a nudist country.
It’s not that you drop the etiquette, but to adapt to circumstances.
While a bald-headed woman uses her gold hairpin as a hanger,
a blind man uses his precious eyeglass as a cup lid.
While buffaloes don’t listen to melodious stone chimes,
elephants don’t appreciate precious jewel garlands.
Oh ho! For the most profound music,
you have to melt down all the gold and cast a Tu Ky.

(NOTES.* Living in the Spring and Autumn Period, around 6th century BC, Tu Ky (Chinese: Ziqi) was one of the most famous aesthetes in China. When the musician Ba Nha (Boya) played the qin and reached high notes to describe the mountains, Tu Ky said he saw the Moun Tai Shan appearing; when Ba Nha played the sound of a violent stream, Tu Ky said he saw the rivers rushing to the sea. After Tu Ky died, Ba Nha smashed his musical instrument and never played again.)

A Visit to Zen Master Tang Dien

Don’t need to live in royal luxury or in deep forests.
Eventually, you can calm your mind in any place.
People all see a thousand mountains shining.
Who hears the monkey’s deep voice from deep caves?

19
VIẾNG ĐẠI SƯ TĂNG ĐIỀN

Chẳng cần cửa tía, chẳng cần rừng
Rốt cuộc chỗ nào chẳng an tâm
Thế nhân trọn thấy ngàn non sáng
Mấy kẻ lắng nghe tiếng vượn trầm.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Visiting Zen Master Phuoc Duong, Asking about His Illness

When the wind blows the water, the waves appear;
When the fire reaches the wood, the flame flares up.
Now you know the four elements have no boundaries.
Keep pace with the flow, despite the mountain of swords.

20
THĂM BỆNH ĐẠI SƯ PHƯỚC ĐƯỜNG

Gió, nước gặp nhau sóng dấy lên
Lửa, cây chạm phải chùm lửa bùng.
Mới hay bốn đại không ranh giới
Núi kiếm mặc tình men theo dòng.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Homage to Zen Master Tieu Dao at Phuoc Duong

I now live in a deep rural village,
far away from the aura of Master.
Like the stars of dawn and dusk, Master and I drift apart;
However, my mind always stays with Master
as in a mirror appearing a couple of phoenix.
Expressing gratefulness to Master for teaching me the Way,
I have since leisurely sung the song of the Unborn.
Now quietly putting words into a poem of praise,
I respecfully make offering to the dharma seat.

I live clumsily here, always keeping in mind the four great debts. Despite I’d had awkward thoughts, Master showed me the essence of thoughts.
My mind now is simple; alone, I now keep an inch of direct mind.

LỄ THIỀN SƯ TIÊU DAO Ở PHƯỚC ĐƯỜNG

 Hằng xa phong thái,
 Ở chốn hoang thôn.
Thân tuy ngoài cõi Sâm với Thương
Ý vẫn trong gương loan và phượng.
Nhàn nhã ngâm khúc vô sanh
Hầu đáp ơn thầy mớm sữa.
 Trộm có lời thơ tụng
 Cúi dâng lên pháp tòa
Thân tuy quê kịch ngụ nơi này
Bốn trọng ân nào dám lãng khuây.
Ý vụng sớm nhờ thêm ý khí
Lòng tàn riêng giữ tấc lòng son.

When the spring comes, I view the cherry trees blooming.
When the wind breezes, I hear the bamboo leaves trembling.
Previously, I came to see Master, and asked all things;
Now, I just want to invite Master to play the no-string harp.

Sending my best regards to the old sage,
I wish for Master a life of elegance, health and longevity.
Having willed to sacrifice body just like Hue Kha*,
Master’s given the dharma transmission -- all skin and marrow.
I wish for Master, just like Trieu Chau**, a long life as turtle and crane.

Thus it’s known that Buddha is living among human folks.
Hence it’s no surprise when a lotus blooms in fire.

Respecfully, this poem of praise is made as an offering to Master.
Wishing Master not to reject this little gift.

Xuân về ngắm rỗng hoa đào nở
Gió thổi nghe hờ tiếng trúc lay.
Ngày trước đến nhà thăm hỏi hết
Không dây nay thỉnh dạo cung đàn.
Tạm qua thăm hỏi Cổ chùy thiền
Tướng mạo mười mươi khỏe lại bền.
Huệ Khả thân buồn, da tủy ký
Triệu Châu tuổi thọ, hạc qui niên.
Nên biết thế gian người có Phật
Lạ gì lò lửa nở hoa sen
Trân trọng dâng lên lời tụng hứng
Chớ từ chút ít lễ vật hèn.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

The Scenery of Phuoc Duong

Here the scenery of Phuoc Duong --
where the Zen breeze cools off,
the fence tilts wildly, the young bamboo shoots grow thinly,
the gate remains serene, and the cypress trees stand still.
While it’s not time for the sages to appear,
this primeval forest is where the rare animals stay hidden.
Someday the Buddha sun will rise,
the cherry trees will bloom,
and the gate will shine bright in the light of spring.

22
CẢNH VẬT PHƯỚC ĐƯỜNG

Phước Đường cảnh trí chính là đây
Nương ngọn gió thiền mát mẻ thay.
Dậu đổ tiêu sơ măng mọc ốm
Cổng sân tịch mịch rặng tùng gầy.
Chưa gặp thời lành, hiền thánh hiện
Khá vui thú quí ẩn rừng này.
Sớm muộn trời già khai Phật nhật
Cửa vào đào lý cợt xuân quang.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

23
A Poem to Dharma Master Thuan Nhat

The dharma body is serene and extinguishing;
however, your physical body is here.
Sitting still at night, you enter the world of dream.
Though not traveling the way of Patriarch Zen,
you are a regular attendee at the palace of Dharma King.
If you are lazy to take a holy stride on the unborn way,
you will impurely be born again as earthly or heavenly beings.
If you meet an enlightener and hear the profound meaning,
you will see yourself as walking on Thien Tan Bridge and watching the circus monkeys.

23
TẶNG PHÁP SƯ THUẦN NHẤT

Pháp thân tịch diệt, sắc thân còn
Đêm lặng canh ba vào mộng hồn.
Ví chửa rong chơi Thiền Tổ Vực
Cũng từng qua lại Pháp vương môn.
Vô sanh đường Thánh lười tiến bước
Hữu lậu trời người cam kết tròn.
Nếu gặp tác gia bàn diệu chỉ
Thiên Tân bến ấy dấy hồ tôn.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

24
Making Fun of Zen Master Tri Vien For Reading Scriptures and Explaining the Way

With brush as rod, ink as bait, and reason as boat
-- amid the wind and waves, he sails over the sea of study.
I now praise Tri Vien, who swings a rod
and dreams of catching a big dragon in the year of the mule.*

(NOTES. * The twelve-year animal cycle has not anything related to the mule. Tue Trung made fun of his friend Tri Vien, who believed that the Way could be learned from books.)

24
ĐÙA THIỀN SƯ TRÍ VIỄN XEM KINH GIẢI NGHĨA

Mực mồi thơm ngát, bút làm cần
Biển học sóng đùa, lý là thuyền.
Khen ngợi Viễn Công từng câu thả
Rồng to bắt được, phải năm lừa.

25
In Memory of the Late Master

An unborn song is just concluded.
A staff is just held horizontally for the way home.
Is there a place for one who stepped forward from the top of the pole?
Riding a mud ox, leisurely traveling backward.

25
ĐIỆU TIÊN SƯ

Một khúc vô sanh hát vừa im
Vác ngang cây gậy về cố hương.
Đầu trên qua khỏi nơi nào có
Trâu đất tha hồ cỡi ngược lên.
 (Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

26
Advising People to Enter the Way

Then spring now autumn, the four seasons revolve.
Then young now old, you see the hair turn white.
Then wealth and nobility, now it’s just a long dream.
Years and months go by, carrying ten thousand pecks of sorrow.
In the path of suffering, the wheel of rebirth rolls endlessly.
In the river of passion, we swim like bubbles forming and popping.
Now coming to the right place to learn the Way,
why don’t you touch your nose?
See that this is your very good chance of a million lifetimes.

26
KHUYÊN ĐỜI VÀO ĐẠO

Thời tiết xoay vần xuân lại thu
Xăm xăm tuổi trẻ đã bạc đầu.
Giàu sang nhìn lại một trường mộng
Năm tháng ôm suông muôn hộc sầu.
Nẻo khổ luân hồi xe chuyển bánh
Sông yêu chìm nổi tợ bọt chùm.
Gặp trường chẳng chịu sờ lên mũi
Muôn kiếp duyên lành chỉ thế thôi.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

27
A Dharma Talk

Stop searching for Thieu That and Tao Khe.
The essence of mind is always luminous, never dusky.
The ancient moon illuminates, discriminating neither near nor far.
The lofty wind breezes, discriminating neither high nor low.
Affected by environment color, the autumn light is either black or white.
Despite muddy water, the lotus flower blooms fragrantly and rosily.
Just sing the profound song from your original mind.
Don’t search elsewhere – despite East, West, South and North.

27
BẢO CHÚNG

Thôi tìm Thiếu Thất với Tào Khê
Thể tánh sáng ngời chửa từng mê.
Trăng cổ chiếu soi nào cận viễn
Gió trời thổi mát thấp cao chê.
Ánh thu đen trắng tùy duyên sắc
Sen nở thơm hồng bùn chẳng hề.
Diệu khúc xưa nay cần cứ hát
Chớ tìm nam bắc với đông tê.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

28
Another Dharma Talk

People like the false, and dislike the truth; however, true mind and false mind are also dusts of the mind.
If you want to jump beyond to reach the other shore,
just observe the young child here, and see the ancient face.

28
BẢO CHÚNG

Người đời ưa vọng chẳng ưa chân
Chân vọng tâm kia cũng là trần.
Cốt muốn nhảy thẳng lên bờ ấy
Hãy tham đồng tử đang có đây.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

29
A Discourse to Learners

You learners hesitate in front of so many directions.
Polishing a tile to make a mirror only wastes your time.
You should stop relying on other people’s entrances.
A ray of spring light makes flowers blooming everywhere.

29
BẢO HỌC GIẢ

Học giả rối bời biết là sao
Luống đem gạch ngói uổng công mài.
Bảo anh thôi chớ nương cửa khác
Một điểm ánh xuân chốn chốn hoa.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

30
Inspired

Sitting still at home, and having no words,
I leisurely view a plume of smoke hovering over Con Luan Mountain.
Feeling relaxed, and having no thoughts in mind,
I don’t give care for either Zen or controlling thoughts.

30
CHỢT HỨNG

Trong nhà ngồi thẳng lặng không lời
Nhàn ngắm Côn Luân mảnh khói trôi.
Đến khi nghe nhọc tâm liền bặt
Chẳng cần nhiếp niệm chẳng cần thiền.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

31
The Cypress at a Ravine

I love so much the green cypress planted years ago.
Don’t complain that the steep ground tilts the cypress.
Don’t wonder that there is not a pillar made from this cypress wood yet.
Wild grass and field flowers are full in front of my eyes.

31
CỘI TÙNG ĐÁY KHE

Rất thích tùng xanh trồng mấy niên
Chớ than thế đất khiến tùng nghiêng.
Cột rường chưa dụng người đừng lạ
Cỏ nội hoa ngàn mắt hiện tiền.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

32
Away from Dust

Having lived with desires has made us suffering.
Throw away all dust now, break free from the world of desires now.
Drop your hands, then go beyond to the land of Buddha and patriarchs.
Once and for all, make all clean – once and for all.

32
XUẤT TRẦN

Đã từng vật dục khiến lao đao
Buông hết trần ai thoát khỏi nào.
Bên ấy thõng tay siêu Phật, Tổ
Một lần phủi giũ trắng phau phau.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

33
The Great Way Is Not Difficult

The great way is not difficult; don’t say it’s difficult.
Turning your head, and transforming your mind lead you further astray.
Using mind to search for mind is like getting hooked.
Just like a fish jumping over the bamboo rod.

33
ĐẠO LỚN KHÔNG KHÓ

Đạo lớn không khó đừng bảo khó
Quay đầu chuyển não càng mịt mờ.
Đem tâm lại nhắm cầu tâm ấy,
Giống hệt cá con nhảy ngọn tre.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

34
The Ultimate Mind

The ultimate mind has neither appearance nor form.
Even bright eyes like dragon’s jewels can not see it.
Do you want to see the true face of the ultimate mind?
Ha ha! Just hear the third watch drum at noon.

34
TÂM VƯƠNG

Tâm vương không tướng cũng không hình
Mắt tợ ly châu vẫn chẳng minh.
Muốn biết loại này chân diện mục
Ha! Ha! giữa ngọ là canh ba.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

35
Setting Free the Ox

Coming to Qui Son inspiredly, I have a best friend now.
Living in the wild, I enjoy taming the ox.
The King has the kindness vast as the ocean;
however, I am happy with the water and grass here in springtime.

35
THẢ TRÂU

Chợt hứng non Qui được bạn thân
Đồng hoang cam nhận kẻ mục đồng
Quốc vương ơn đức rộng như bể
Tùy phận đôi phần nước cỏ xuân.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

36
Writing for the Temple

Coming at the gate of the temple just few moments,
I swayed the brush vertically and horizontally, and finished the Zen poem fast.
The new year is coming, and the brush is so sharp.
Buddha of the three realms is not like this.

36
ĐỀ TINH XÁ

Bước đến cổng chùa chửa phút giây
Dọc ngang kệ tụng viết xong ngay.
Năm sang ngọn bút sao sắc lắm
Ba cõi Như Lai chẳng thế này.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

37
Inspired to Make a Poem

Waking up from the dream, now you have to watch carefully.
For adequate conditions, things will appear
before your eyes; Beware of twilight.
Even those who’ve obtained the five kinds of eyes
still would mistake a bell for a jar.

37
CHỢT HỨNG

Mộng dậy cần nên xét kỹ xem
Gặp thời chạm mắt chớ tối mèm.
Dầu cho ngũ nhãn thông minh đấy
Chưa khỏi gọi chuông là hũ xem.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

38
The Zen Staff

The staff I hold every day is able
to suddenly become a tiger or a dragon.
I handle it gently, because raising high the staff
could shatter mountains and rivers,
and because swinging it could blur the sun and the moon.
Now the three-foot Song Lam Staff is nowhere to be seen,
and the six-ring Dia Tang Staff is hard to be found.
Despite the worldly paths are so rough and rocky,
this old man has no anxiety to get over.

38
CÂY GẬY

Ngày một trong tay nương gậy rong
Bỗng dưng như cọp cũng như rồng.
Nắm lên lại ngại núi sông nát
Quơ gậy, e rằng trời, trăng mờ.
Ba thước Song Lâm chỗ nào có
Sáu khoen Địa Tạng ưa khó tầm.
Dù cho thế đạo gai chông lắm
Chẳng nệ từ xưa lão chập chùng.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

39
Reflecting on Myself

My head is feeling burnt; my forehead, getting bruised;
and my body, wearing the golden mandarin suit.
I’ve lived the life of a humble horse for five years and then seven years.
If you are truly extraordinary, why don’t you
drop all things at once to soar beyond at once?

39
CHIẾU THÂN

Cháy đầu dập trán mặc kim bào
Năm bảy năm qua kiếp ngựa mao.
Ví thực siêu quần cùng xuất chúng
Một lần buông xuống một lần cao.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

40
Writing for Myself

My eyes are full of the light reflected from mountains and rivers, but my brush can not show the autumn light.
The one-flow Tao Khe Stream is cool,
and the thousand-year Hung Nhi Mountain is full of green cypress trees.
A lantern could shatter the diamond lock,
and the entrance pillars could swallow prickles.
If you want to know the true meaning,
just look at Tan La, where the sun shines bright at midnight.

(NOTES. Tao Khe is the place where Huineng first gave dharma talks. Hung Nhi Mountain is where Bodhidharma sat in retreat. Tan La is the ancient name of Korea, a country lying east of China – also, implying the direction the sun rises in the morning.)

40

41
Suddenly Enlightened

Don’t say that there is a difference between existence and emptiness.
Birth and death originally come from the same water-wave flow.
Tonight’s moon shines bright with the light of last night’s moon.
New year’s flowers bloom with the smiles of last year’s flowers.
The wind blows chilly, flying swift the three periods of time
and burning out fast the torch of life.
As the ants crawling on the rim of a bowl,
sentient beings take rebirths up and down in the nine realms.
Then you ask what is the ultimate way.
-- Maha Prajna Svaha.

41
CHỢT TỈNH

Đoán rằng Không Hữu chẳng khác nhau
Sanh tử vốn từ mạch sóng xao.
Trăng sáng tối qua, nay trăng sáng
Hoa cười năm mới, năm cũ hoa.
Ba đời nhanh chóng, gió đùa đuốc
Chín cõi xoay vần, kiến bò quanh.
Hoặc hỏi thế nào là cứu kính
Ma-ha Bát-nhã Tát-bà-ha.

(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Freedom

Constantly, the rats gnaw the string from which my life is dangling.
I now return, and live my old age in the land of forest and mountain.
A thatched house with a wooden stick door – that’s where I dwell in joy.
Neither right nor wrong – my mind rests in freedom.

42
TỰ TẠI

Bìm, chuột không nhân mãi mãi xâm
Lui về, già gởi chốn sơn lâm.
Nhà tranh cửa gỗ đời thanh thoát
Không đúng không sai tự tại tâm.

Advice to Students

When a thought arises, then your mind arises.
When your mind forgets thinking, then all thoughts vanish.
If you want to know the true meaning,
see that a stone tiger is biting a golden goat.
Snap your fingers, and see heaven and earth appear;
Give a cough, and hear mountains and rivers shake.
Temporarily, the rain and wind are swirling.
When a rooster crows, the fifth watch of the night comes.

43
BẢO HỌC TRÒ

Niệm khởi tâm tâm khởi
Tâm quên niệm niệm quên.
Muốn biết ý đích thực
Cọp đá cắn dê vàng.
Đất trời ngón tay khảy
Sông núi tiếng ho khàn.
Tạm thời mưa gió động
Gà gáy canh năm sang.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Cultivate Good Karma of the West

The precious body of Amitabha Buddha is in your mind.
The dharma body is everywhere – North, South, East, West.
I see high in the sky only a lonely moon
that shines bright here the vast ocean of the Pure Land in this autumn night.

BẢO TU NGHIỆP TÂY PHƯƠNG

Thân báu Di-đà ở nội tâm
Đông Tây Nam Bắc pháp thân trùm.
Bầu trời chỉ thấy vầng trăng lẻ
Trong vắt đêm thu cả biển chùa.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

45
Free From the Worldly

Take a turn, make a jump, and leap out of the fire circle.
Entering the eye of emptiness, all things are truly emptiness.
The three realms appear vastly, and the mind shines clearly.
The moon sets in the West, and the sun rises in the East.

45
THOÁT ĐỜI

Chuyển mình một nhảy khỏi lửa vòng
Muôn việc đều không vào mắt không.
Ba cõi thênh thang tâm sáng rỡ
Vầng trăng tây lặn, nhật lên đông.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)

Being Joyful With Rivers and Lakes

Floating on a long river, my small boat is paddled through,
away from the waterfalls and cliffs.
I hear from afar the cry of a wild goose.
The wind of autumn arises and breezes over everywhere.

46
VUI THÚ SÔNG HỒ

Sông dài thuyền nhỏ nổi lênh đênh
Chèo nhịp đẩy qua đoạn thác ghềnh.
Tiếng nhạn từ đâu đưa vẳng lại
Gió thu dấy động khắp mông mênh.
(Bản dịch HT Thanh Từ)
