(skt)
(A-1)
Tổng quan và Ý nghĩa của “Đạo”
Overview
and Meanings of the “Way”
(I)
Đại Cương về Đạo—An overview of Marga:
(A)
Đạo: Marga (skt)—Con đường.
(B)
Thánh đạo—Noble path:
1)
Đạo Đế: Đạo Đế hay đế thứ tư trong Tứ Diệu Đế—The
fourth of the four dogmas—See Four Noble Truths in Chapter 20.
2)
Đạo Thánh Đế: Con đường diệt khổ là con đường chấm
dứt dục vọng—The way to end all sufferings. Marga is the way that
procures cessation. The doctrine of the path that leads to the extinction
of passion—See Four Noble (Holy) Truths.
3)
The eight holy or correct ways, or gates out of suffering into nirvana.
(C)
Đạo Phật—Buddhism: See Chapter II.
(II)
Nghĩa của Đạo—The meanings of “Path”:
1)
Đạo cú nghĩa là “con đường”: “Path” means a way.
2)
Đề là quả: In Buddhism, “Marga” is described as the cause of
liberation, bodhi as its result.
3)
“Marga” is a Sanskrit term for “path” in Buddhist practice that
leads to liberation from cyclic existence—See Eight Noble Paths in Chapter
20.
4)
to the Sutra In Forty-Two Sections, Chapter 2, the Buddha said: “The
Path of Sramanas who have left the home-life renounce love, cut (uproot)
desire and recognize the source of their minds. They penetrate the Buddha’s
Wonderful Dharmas and awaken to unconditioned dharmas. They do not seek
to obtain anything internal; nor do they seek anything external. Their
minds are not bound by the Way nor are they tied up in Karma. They are
without thoughts and without actions; they neither cultivate nor achieve
(certify); they do not need to pass through the various stages and yet
are respected and revered. This is what is meant by the Way.”
Sự tu tập trên con đường này đưa đến con đường kế tiếp là con đường chuẩn bị—First of the five paths delineated in Buddhist meditation theory, during which one amasses (tích trữ) two “collections”: 1) the ‘collection of merit’ (punya-sambhara), involves cultivating virtuous deeds and attitudes, which produce corresponding positive karmic results; and 2) the ‘collection of wisdom’ (jnana-sambhara), involves cultivating meditation in order to obtain wisdom for the benefit of other sentient beings. In Mahayana meditation theory, it is said that one enters on the path with the generation of the “mind of awakening” (Bodhicitta). The training of this path leads to the next level, the “path of preparation” (prayoga-marga).
(A-2)

177 (84).
3)
Đạo Cấm:

tu hành: Whatever is prohibited by the religion or the religious life.

Phật tiến tu chứng đắc “Trung Đạo”—One of the six germ-natures
or roots of Bodhisattva development, the nature possessing the seed of
Buddhahood. The stage in which the “middle” way is realized.
6)

7)

Y Tăng già lê: The double robe, Y vai trái: The upper robe, Y nội:
Under robe, Bình bát: Bowl, Dao: Knife, Kim may: Needle, Dây nịt:
Belt, Đồ lọc nước: Strainer or filter).
8)
lưu, do đâu trở lại ngưng trệ, tâm không trụ nơi pháp,
biết đó là lầm lớn.”—According to the Platform Sutra of the
Sixth Patriarch’s Dharma Treasure, the Sixth Patriarch, Hui-Neng, taught:
“Good Knowing Advisors, the Way must penetrate and flow. How can it be
impeded? If the mind does not dwell in dharmas, the way will penetrate
and flow. The mind that dwells in dharmas is in self-bondage. To say that
sitting unmoving is correct is to be like Sariputra who sat quietly in
the forest but was scolded by Vimalakirti. Good Knowing Advisors, there
are those who teach people to sit looking at the mind and contemplating
stillness, without moving or arising. They claimed that it has merit. Confused
men, not understanding, easily become attached and go insane. There are
many such people. Therefore, you should know that teaching of this kind
is a greater error.”
9)
Đạo Đế: Chân lý thứ tư trong Tứ Diệu Đế, là chân lý
diệt khổ, là Bát Thánh Đạo—The path leading to the end (extinction)
of suffering, the fourth of the four axioms, i.e. the eightfold noble path—Đạo
giáo—The Eightfold Path to the Cessation of Duhkha and afflictions,
enumerated in the fourth Noble Truth, is the Buddha’s prescription for
the suffering experienced by all beings. It is commonly broken down into
three components: morality, concentration and wisdom. Another approach
identifies a path beginning with charity, the virtue of giving. Charity
or generosity underlines morality or precept, which in turn enables a person
to venture into higher aspirations. Morality, concentration and wisdom
are the core of Buddhist spiritual training and are inseparably linked.

Tam Đạo—Three Paths:
(A)
Tổng quan về Tam Đạo—An overview of Three Paths: Theo Giáo Sư
được đời sống lý tưởng—According to Prof. Junjiro Takakusu
in The Essentials of Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhism lays stress on the Threefold
Learning (siksa) of Higher Morality, Higher Thought, and Higher Insight.
That is to say, without higher morals one cannot get higher thought and
without higher thought one cannot attain higher insight. Higher thought
here comprises the results of both analytical investigation and meditative
intuition. Buddhism further instructs the aspirants, when they are qualified,
in the Threefold Way (marga) of Life-View, Life-Culture and Realization
of Life-Ideal or No-More Learning. These are three stages to be passed
through in the study of the Fourfold Truth by the application of the Eightfold
Noble Path; in the second stage it is investigated more fully and actualized
by the practice of the Seven Branches of Enlightenment, life-culture here
again means the results of right meditation; and in the last stage the
Truth is fully realized in the Path of No-More-Learning. In other words,
without a right view of life there will be no culture, and without proper
culture there will be no realization of life.
(B)
Chi tiết về Tam Đạo—Details of Three Paths:
1)
Kiến Đạo—The Path of Life-View: Thấy được chân lý chấm
niệm, chánh mạng, chánh định)—The way or stage of beholding
the truth of no reincarnation, i.e. that of the Sravakas and the first
stage of the Bodhisattvas. In the Fourfold Noble Truth, the Path to Enlightenment
with the Eightfold Noble Path which the Buddha taught to be pursued by
the Ariya (right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right
mindfulness, right endeavor, right livelihood, right concentration)—See
Tứ Diệu Đế and Bát Thánh Đạo in Chapter 20.
2)
Tu Đạo—The Path of Life-Culture (Cultivating the truth): Giai đoạn
theo Thất Giác Chi (trạch pháp, tinh tấn, hỷ, khinh an, niệm,
định, và xả)—The next stage of the path is the Path of Practice
and is described as the Seven Branches of Enlightenment (thorough investigation
of the Principle, brave effort, joyous thought, peaceful thought, mindfulness,
concentration, and equanimity)—See Ba Mươi Bảy Phẩm Trợ Đạo
in Chapter 21.
3)
Vô Học Đạo—The Path of No-More-Learning: Đã hoàn toàn thấu
A La Hán.
the truth without further study. Practitioners proceed to the last stage,
i.e., the Path of No-More-Learning. Then the firm conviction that they
have realized the Fourfold Truth will present itself. When the Ariya reaches
this stage, he becomes an arhat. According to the Hinayanistic view this
is the perfect state of enlightenment, but according to the Mahayanistic
view an arhat is thought to be only partially enlightened. The purpose
of Buddhism is to perfect a man's character, or to let him attain Buddhahood
on the basis of wisdom and right cultivation, i.e., the highest personality.
Such are the characteristics of Buddhism.
(A-4)
Đạt Đạo
Attainment
of the Way
(I) Quan niệm về sự Đạt Đạo theo Lục Tổ Huệ Năng—The concept of “Attaining the Way” according to the Sixth Patriarch, Hui-Neng: Theo Lục Tổ Huệ Năng, đắc đạo không quan hệ gì đến sự vận hành liên tục từ sai lầm đến chân lý, hay từ vô minh đến giác ngộ. According to the Sixth Patriarch Hui-Neng, the attainment of the Tao does not involve a continuous movement from error to truth, or from ignorance to enlightenment. Nowadays, all Zen masters agree with the patriarch and proclaim that there is no enlightenment whatever which you can claim to have attained. If you say you have attained something, this is the surest proof that you have gone astray. Therefore, not to have is to have; silence is thunder; ignorance is enlightenment; the holy disciples of the purity-path go to hell while the precept-violating Bhikshus attain Nirvana; the wiping-off means dirt-accumulating; all these paradoxical sayings, and Zen literature is filled with them, are no more than so many negations of the continuous movement from discrimination to non-discrimination, from affectability to non-affectability, and so on, and so on...
Theo tông này thì sự vận hành từ mê đến ngộ là ngay lập tức chứ không từ từ, gián đoạn chứ không liên tục—The idea of continuous movement fails to account for the facts, first, that the moving process stops at the originally bright mirror, and makes no further attempt to go on indefinitely, and secondly, that the pure nature of the mirror suffers itself to be defiled, i.e. that from one object comes another object absolutely contradicting it. To put this another way: absolute negation is needed, but can it be possible when the process is continuous? Here is the reason why Hui-Neng persistently opposes the view cherished by his opponents. He does not espouse the doctrine of continuity which is the Gradual School of Shen-Hsiu. All those who hold the view of a continuous movement belong to the latter. Hui-Neng, on the other hand, is the champion of the Abrupt School. According to this school the movement from ignorance to enlightenment is abrupt and not gradual, discrete and not continuous.
Quá trình này gián đoạn, lập tức và không thể tính toán được, đó là “Thấy được tự tánh.”—That the process of enlightenment is abrupt means that there is a leap, logical and psychological, in the Buddhist experience. The logical leap is that the ordinary process of reasoning stops short, and what has been considered irrational is perceived to be perfectly natural, while the psychological leap is that the borders of consciousness are overstepped and one is plunged into the Unconscious which is not, after all, unconscious. This process is discrete, abrupt, and altogether beyond calculation; this is “Seeing into one’s Self-nature.”
Nếu được giải thoát rồi, tức đó là Bát Nhã Tam Muội, và khi Bát Nhã Tam Muội đã được hiểu rõ thì đó là trạng thái của “Vô Niệm.”—In the Platform Sutra, Hui Neng said: “Oh friends, while under Hung-Jen Master I had a satori by just once listening to his words, and abruptly saw into the original nature of Suchness. This is the reason why I wish to see this teaching propagated, so that seekers of the truth may also be abruptly have an insight into Bodhi, see each by himself what his mind is, what original nature is… All the Buddhas of the past, present, and future, and all the Sutras belonging to the twelve divisions are in the self-nature of each individual, where they were from the first… There is within oneself that which knows, and thereby one has “satori.” If there rises an erroneous thought, falsehood and perversions obtain; and no outsiders, however wise, are able to instruct such people, who are, indeed, beyond help. But if there takes place an illumination by means of genuine Prajna, all falsehood vanish in an instant. If one’s self-nature is understood, one ‘satori’ is enough to make one rise to a state of Buddhahood. Oh friends, when there is a Prajna illumination, the inside as well as the outside becomes thoroughly translucent, and a man knows by himself what his original mind is, which is no more than emancipation. When emancipation is obtained, it is the Prajna-samadhi, and when this Prajna-samadhi is understood, there is realized a state of “thoughtlessness.”
(A-5)
Thông Đạt Phật Đạo
Enter
the Buddha’s path
(I) Thông Đạt Đạo Vô Thượng Đạo ngay trong Cuộc Sống Hằng Ngày—Actualization of the Supreme Way in Daily Life: Một trong ba mục tiêu của tọa thiền. At this point we do not distinguish the end from the means. The highest type of Zen corresponds to this stage. When you sit earnestly and egolessly in accordance with the instructions of a competent teacher, with your mind fully conscious yet as free of thought as a pure white sheet of paper is unmarred by a blemish, there is an unfoldment of your intrinsically pure Buddha-nature whether you have had awakening or not. But what must be emphasized here is that only with true awakening do you directly apprehend the truth of your Buddha-nature and perceive that awakening, the purest type of Zen, is no different from that practiced by all Buddhas.

Thông Đạt Phật Đạo—Enter the Buddha’s path: Theo Kinh
Duy Ma Cật, chương tám, phẩm Phật Đạo, cư sĩ Duy Ma Cật
đã nói về “Thông Đạt Phật Đạo” như sau—According to
the Vimalalkirti Sutra, chapter eighth, the Buddha Path, Upasaka Vimalakirti
explained to Manjusri Boshisattva about “Entering the Buddha Path”
as follows.
*
Bấy giờ ngài Văn Thù Sư Lợi hỏi ông Duy Ma Cật rằng: “Bồ
Tát thế nào là thông đạt Phật đạo?”—Manjusri asked Vimalakirti:
“How does a Bodhisattva enter the Buddha path?”
*
Duy Ma Cật đáp: “Bồ Tát thực hành phi đạo (trái đạo)
là thông đạt Phật đạo.”—Vimalakirti replied: “If a Bodhisattva
treads the wrong ways (without discrimination) he enters the Buddha path.”
*
Văn Thù Sư Lợi hỏi: “Thế nào là Bồ Tát thực hành phi
đạo?”—Manjusri asked: “What do you mean by a Bodhisattva treading
the wrong ways?”
*
Duy Ma Cật đáp: “Nếu Bồ Tát gây năm tội vô gián mà không
buồn giận, đến ở trong địa ngục mà không có tội cấu;
tu các công đức; hiện làm loạn ý mà thường niệm định;
hạng tàn tật mà đủ tướng tốt để trang nghiêm thân mình;
replied: “(In his work of salvation) if a Bodhisattva is free from irritation
and anger while appearing in the fivefold uninterrupted hell; is free from
the stain of sins while appearing in (other) hells; is free from ignorance,
arrogance and pride while appearing in the world of animals; is adorned
with full merits while appearing in the world of hungry ghosts; does not
show his superiority while appearing in the (heavenly) worlds of form and
beyond form; is immune from defilements while appearing in the world of
desire; is free from anger while appearing as if he were resentful; uses
wisdom to control his mind while appearing to be stupid; appears as if
he were greedy but gives away all his outer (i.e. money and worldly) and
inner (i.e. bodily) possessions without the least regret for his own life;
appears as if he broke the prohibitions while delighting in pure living
and being apprehensive of committing even a minor fault; appears as if
he were filled with hatred while always abiding in compassionate patience;
appears as if he were remiss while diligently practicing all meritorious
virtues; appears as if he were disturbed while always remaining in the
state of serenity; appears as if he were ignorant while possessing both
mundane and supramundane wisdoms; appears as if he delighted in flattering
and falsehood while he excels in expedient methods in conformity with straightforwardness
as taught in the sutras; shows arrogance and pride while he is as humble
as a bridge; appears as if he were tormented by troubles while his mind
remains pure and clean; appears in the realm of demons while defeating
heterodox doctrines to conform with the Buddha wisdom; appears in the realm
of sravakas where he expounds the unheard of supreme Dharma; appears in
the realm of pratyeka-buddhas where he converts living beings in fulfillment
of great compassion; appears amongst the poor but extends to them his precious
hand whose merits are inexhaustible; appears amongst the crippled and disabled
with his own body adorned with the excellent physical marks (of the Buddha);
appears amongst the lower classes but grows the seed of the Buddha nature
with all relevant merits; appears amongst the emaciated and ugly showing
his strong body to the admiration of them all; appears as an old and ill
man but is actually free from all ailments with no fear of death; appears
as having all the necessities of life but always sees into impermanence
and is free from greed; appears to have wives, concubines and maids but
always keeps away from the morass of the five desires; appears amongst
the dull-witted and stammerers to help them win the power of speech derived
from the perfect control of mind; appears amongst heretics to teach orthodoxy
and deliver all living beings; enters all worlds of existence to help them
uproot the causes leading thereto; and appears as if entering nirvana but
without cutting off birth and death; Manjusri, this Bodhisattva can tread
heterodox ways because he has access to the Buddha path.”

Đạo Tràng
Bodhi-mandala
(skt)
(I)
Nghĩa của Đạo Tràng—The meanings of Bodhis-mandala:
1)
Nơi hay chỗ Phật thành đạo: A place, or seat where Buddha
attained enlightenment.
2)
Nơi chúng ta tu hành tìm cầu chân lý: A place of truth where we
strive in pursuit of the truth.
3)
Nơi cúng dường Phật: An object or place for religious offerings.
4)
Nơi dạy đạo, học đạo, hay tu tập: A place for teaching, learning,
or practising religion.
5)
Pháp hành đề đắc đạo: A place, or method, for attaining to Buddha-truth.
(II)
Đạo Tràng theo Kinh Duy Ma Cật—Bodhis-mandala according to the
Vimalakirti Sutra: Theo Kinh Duy Ma Cật, Phật bảo Bồ Tát
Quang Nghiêm đến thăm bệnh cư sĩ Duy Ma Cật dùm Phật. Quang
to the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Buddha asked Glorious Light Bodhisattva to
visit Vimalakirti to enquire his health on the Buddha’s behalf. Glorious
Light replied: “World Honoured One, I am not qualified to call on him
to enquire after his health. The reason is that once while I was
leaving Vaisali I met Vimalakirti who was entering it. I saluted
and asked him ‘Where does the Venerable Upasaka come form?
•
Duy Ma Cật đáp: “Tôi từ Đạo tràng đến.”—Vimalakirti
replied: “From a bodhimandala (a holy site).”
•
Quang Nghiêm hỏi: “Đạo tràng là gì?”—Glorious Light asked
him: ‘Where is this bodhimandala?’
•
Duy Ma Cật đáp: “Trực tâm là Đạo tràng, vì không hư dối;
biếng trễ; thiền định là đạo tràng, vì tâm điều nhu;
chịu sự khổ nhọc; hỷ là đạo tràng, vì ưa vui Chánh Pháp;
các Pháp vốn không; hàng ma là đạo tràng, vì không lay động;
ở nơi Phật Pháp vậy—Vimalakirti replied: ‘The straightforward
mind is the bodhimandala, for it is free from fasehood. The initiated
mind is the bodhimandala, for it can keep discipline. The profound
mind is the bodhimandala, for it accumulates merits. The enlightened
mind is the bodhimandala for it is infallible. Charity (dana) is
the bodhimandala, for it does not expect reward. Discipline (sila) is the
bodhimandala, for it fulfills all vows. Patience (ksanti) is the
bodhimandala for it has access to the minds of all living beings. Zeal (virya) is the bodhimandala, for it is free from remissness. Serenity (dhyana) is the bodhimandala, because of its harmonious mind. Wisdom (prajna) is the bodhimandala, for it discerns all things. Kindness
(maitri) is the bodhimandala, for it treats all living beings on an equal
footing. Compassion (karuna) is the bodhimandala, because of its
great forbearance. Joy (mudita) is the bodhimandala, for it is pleasant. Indifference (upeksa) is the bodhimandala, for it wipes out both love and
hate. Transcendental efficiency is the bodhimandala, for it perfects
all the six supernatural powers (sadabhijna). Liberation is the bodhimandala,
for it turns its back to all phenomenal conditions. Expedient devices
(upaya) are the bodhimandala, for they teach and convert living beings. The four winning actions of a Bodhisattva are the bodhimandala, for
they benefit all living beings. Wide knowledge through hearing the
Dharma is the bodhimandala, for its practice leads to enlightenment. Control of the mind is the Bodhimandala, because of its correct perception
of all things. The thirty-seven contributory stages to enlightenment
are the bodhimandala, for they keep from all worldly activities. The four noble truths are the bodhimandala, because they do not deceive. The twelve links in the chain of existence are the bodhimandala, because
of their underlying nature which is infinite. Troubles (klesa) are
the bodhimandala, for their underlying nature is reality. Living
beings are the bodhimandala, because they are (basically) egoless. All things are the bodhimandala, for they are empty. The defeat of
demons is the bodhimandala, for it is imperturbable. The three realms
(of desire, form and beyond form) are the bodhimandala, for fundamentally
they lead to no real destination. The lion’s roar is the bodhimandala,
because of its fearlessness. The ten powers (dasabla), the four kinds
of fearlessness and the eighteen unsurpassed characteristics of the Buddha
are the bodhimandala, for they are faultless. The three insights
are the bodhimandala, for they are free from all remaining hindrances. The knowledge of all things in the time of a thought is the bodhimandala,
for it brings omniscience (sarvajna) to perfection. Thus, son of
good family, a Bodhisattva should convert living beings according to the
various modes of perfection (paramitas) and all his acts, including the
raising or lowering of a foot, should be interpreted as coming from the
seat of learning (bodhimandala); he should thus stay within the Buddha
Dharma.’

Khi ông Duy Ma Cật nói Pháp ấy, năm trăm vị Thiên nhơn đều
phát tâm Vô thượng Chánh đẳng Chánh giác—While Vimalakirti
was thus expounding the Dharma, five hundred devas developed their minds
set on supreme enlightenment.

Con đường của chơn lý
Path
of truth
How can it be impeded? If the mind does not dwell in dharmas, the way will penetrate and flow. The mind that dwells in dharmas is in self-bondage. To say that sitting unmoving is correct is to be like Sariputra who sat quietly in the forest but was scolded by Vimalakirti. Good Knowing Advisors, there are those who teach people to sit looking at the mind and contemplating stillness, without moving or arising. They claimed that it has merit. Confused men, not understanding, easily become attached and go insane. There are many such people. Therefore, you should know that teaching of this kind is a greater error.”

Ba con đường mà tất cả hành giả đều phải đi qua
Three
paths all cultivators have to tread
(I) Tổng quan về Ba con đường mà tất cả hành giả đều phải đi qua—An overview of the three paths all cultivators have to tread: Theo Giáo Sư Junjiro Takakusu trong Cương Yếu Triết Học Phật Giáo—Phật giáo đặt nền tảng trên Tam Học (siksa): Giới, Định, Tuệ. Nói cách khác, không thấy được đạo thì không tu được đạo và không thực hiện được đời sống lý tưởng—According to Prof. Junjiro Takakusu in The Essentials of Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhism lays stress on the Threefold Learning (siksa) of Higher Morality, Higher Thought, and Higher Insight. That is to say, without higher morals one cannot get higher thought and without higher thought one cannot attain higher insight. Higher thought here comprises the results of both analytical investigation and meditative intuition. Buddhism further instructs the aspirants, when they are qualified, in the Threefold Way (marga) of Life-View, Life-Culture and Realization of Life-Ideal or No-More Learning. These are three stages to be passed through in the study of the Fourfold Truth by the application of the Eightfold Noble Path; in the second stage it is investigated more fully and actualized by the practice of the Seven Branches of Enlightenment, life-culture here again means the results of right meditation; and in the last stage the Truth is fully realized in the Path of No-More-Learning. In other words, without a right view of life there will be no culture, and without proper culture there will be no realization of life.
(II)
Nội dung của Ba Con Đường Nầy—The content of these three Paths:
1)
Kiến Đạo—The Path of Life-View: Thấy được chân lý chấm
niệm, chánh mạng, chánh định)—The way or stage of beholding
the truth of no reincarnation, i.e. that of the Sravakas and the first
stage of the Bodhisattvas. In the Fourfold Noble Truth, the Path to Enlightenment
with the Eightfold Noble Path which the Buddha taught to be pursued by
the Ariya (right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right
mindfulness, right endeavor, right livelihood, right concentration)—See
Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Noble Truth in Chapter 20.
2)
Tu Đạo—The Path of Life-Culture (Cultivating the truth):
a)
an, niệm, định, và xả)—The next stage of the path is the Path
of Practice and is described as the Seven Branches of Enlightenment (thorough
investigation of the Principle, brave effort, joyous thought, peaceful
thought, mindfulness, concentration, and equanimity)—See Seven limbs
of enlightenment in Chapter 21.
b)
phái Gelukpa—According to Tibetan Buddhism, “Lam bras” means the
“Path and result” of cultivation. This is a meditative system that
forms the basis of the training of the Sakyapa order of Tibetan Buddhism.
It is a comprehensive vision of Buddhist practice, based on the Hevajra-Tantra.
In this system, path and result are viewed as being inseparably linked:
the result subsumes (gộp vào) the path, since the latter leads to the
former, and the path subsumes the result, since it is the means by which
it is attained. The method of this kind of practice is traced back to the
Indian Mahasiddha Viruoa, whose vijra Verses (Vajra-gatha—skt) is considered
one of its seminal texts. The main outlines of the system were developed
by Sachen Gunga Nyingpo (1092-1158). “Lam rim” is a Tibetan term for
“Stages of the path,” found in all orders of Tibetan Buddhism, the
oldest example of which is Gampopa (1079-1153) “Jewel Ornament of Liberation.”
Lam rim is also central to the meditative system of the Gelukpa order.
The lam rim tradition conceives of the path to Buddhahood in hierarchically
ordered stages, and trainees are expected to master each stage before moving
on. The meditative training involves progressively eliminating negative
mental states and tendencies while simultaneously engaging in virtuous
actions and training in accordant attitudes. Tsong Khapa (1357-1419), the
founder of the Gelukpa, wrote several works of this type, the most comprehensive
being his “Great Exposition of the Stage of the Path” (Lam rim chen
mo).
Such are the characteristics of Buddhism—See Arhat in Chapter 172.
(A-9)
Con đường chuẩn bị
Prayoga-marga
(skt)
“Prayoga-marga”
is a Sanskrit term for “path of preparation.” This path begins when
a meditator attains the levels of “union of calming and higher insight.”
(samatha-vipasyana-yuganaddha). It is prefatory (giai đoạn giáo đầu)
because the meditator is preparing for the first supramundane path, the
“path of seeing” (darsana-marga), which begins with direct perception
of emptiness (sunyata). There are four levels of the path of preparation:
1)
những khái niệm giả tạo: Heat (usma-gata); in the first stage
the meditator has a direct, non-conceptual awareness of suchness (Tathata),
which said to burn away false conceptuality.
2)
chân như: Peak (murdhan); Peak” marks a point at which the “virtuous
roots” (kusala-mula) that one previously cultivated will not decrease
or be lost, and one progresses in understanding of suchness.
3)
não nữa: Patience (ksanti); “At the level of “patience” the meditator
becomes increasingly familiar with the concept of emptiness and overcomes
fear with respect to it. From this point onward one will never again be
reborn in the lower destinies (gati) of hell beings, hungry ghosts, or
animals due to the force of afflicted actions and attitudes.
4)
Supreme mundane qualities refer to the fact that the meditator actualizes
the highest qualities that are possible within cyclic existence, and at
the same time prepares for direct realization of emptiness, which is a
supramundane attainment.

quả dự lưu Tu Đà Hườn—Discipline or effort to cultivate from
the four good roots to the three studies (morality, meditation and wisdom).
This stage associated with the stage of a Srota-apanna.
b)
to the Great Master Yin Kuang, the clear perception and knowledge of the
enlightened beings at this level is limited to a World System, which
includes the six unwholesome paths, four great continents, Sumeru Mountain,
six Heavens of Desires, First Dhyana Heaven.
c)
trước khi cắt đứt dòng luân hôì sanh tử—This is also one
of the four degrees of the saintliness of the Hearers in the Hinayana.
One who has entered the stream of the Dharma nature, or one who goes against
the flow of samsara. This is the position of the way of seeing. He still
has to undergo seven instances of birth and death before he comes to an

lần hay một lần nữa trở lại trong cõi người—This is also
one of the four degrees of the saintliness of the Hearers in the Hinayana.
The second fruit of “Once-Returner”. The state of returning only once
again, or once more to arrive, or be born. One who is still subject to
“One-return.” The position of the way of cultivation. He still has
to undergo “one birth” in the heavens or “once return” among people.
The second grade of arahatship involving only one rebirth.
3)
Giải Thoát Đạo—Path of Liberation: Tam Quả A Na Hàm—The third
fruit of Anagami Enlightenment.
a)
giai đoạn của Tam quả A Na Hàm—Liberation or freedom, reaching
the state of assurance or proof and knowledge of the truth. This stage
associated with the stage of an Anagamin.
b)

is also one of the four degrees of the saintliness of the Hearers in the
Hinayana. The Path of Non-Returner. The third fruit of “Never returned”.
The state which is not subject to return. One who is not subject to returning.
The position of the Way of Cultivation. He no longer has to undergo birth
and death in the Desire realm. At the end of his life, his consciousness
will go to the highest of the fourth dhyana heavens.
4)
Thắng Tiến Đạo—The Path of Surpassing progress: Tứ Quả A La
Hán—The fourth fruit of Arahat Enlightenment.

a Great World System, consisting of 1,000 Medium World Systems or one billion
World Systems. They are able to know clearly and perfectly 84,000 kalpas
in the past and 84,000 kalpas into the future. Beyond that, they cannot
fully perceive.
c)
của dời sống Phật giáo—This is also one of the four degrees
of the saintliness of the Hearers in the Hinayana. The fourth and final
stage of sainthood (Worthy of offerings) in which all fetters and hindrances
are severed and taints rooted out. The position of the Way of Cultivation
without need of study and practice. He no longer has to undergo birth and
death. Arahant is he who has attained the highest end of the Buddhist life.

Instantaneous knowledge of all ages in past, present and future: Knowledge
of distinctions in all sentient beings’s death in one place and birth
in another in the various states of existence.
j)
Trí khéo biết tất cả chúng sanh lạc dục, phiền não, nghi
hoặc, tập khí đều diệt hết, mà chẳng rời bỏ hạnh Bồ
Tát: Knowledge of extinction of all sentient beings’ deisres, compulsions,
delusions, and habits, without abandoning the practices of Enlightening
Beings.

Mười Đạo Ly Sanh Của Chư Đại Bồ Tát—Ten Paths Of Emancipation
Of Great Enlightening Beings: Theo Kinh Hoa Nghiêm, Phẩm 38,
Bồ Tát (see Ten qualities of Great Enlightening Beings)—According
to the Flower Adornment Sutra, Chapter 38, there are ten Paths Of Emancipation
Of Great Enlightening Beings. Enlightening Beings who abide by these will
attain qualities of certainty of Enlightening Beings.
1)
Xuất sanh Bát Nhã Ba La Mật, mà luôn quán sát tất cả chúng
sanh: Evoking transcendent wisdom, yet always observing all sentient beings.
2)
Xa rời những kiến chấp mà độ thoát tất cả chúng sanh
bị kiến chấp ràng buộc: Detaching from all views, yet liberating
all sentient beings bound by views.
3)
Chẳng tưởng niệm tất cả tướng, mà chẳng bỏ tất cả
chúng sanh chấp tướng: Not minding any appearances, yet not abandoning
sentient beings attached to appearances.
4)
Siêu quá tam giới, mà thường ở tại tất cả thế giới:
Transcending the triple world, yet always being in all worlds.
5)
Rời hẳn phiền não, mà ở chung với tất cả chúng sanh: Forever
leaving afflictions, yet living together with all sentient beings.
6)
Đắc pháp ly dục mà thường dùng đại bi thương xót tất
cả chúng sanh nhiễm trước dục lạc: Attaining desirelessness,
yet always most compassionately pitying all sentient beings attached to
desires.
7)
Thường thích tịch tịnh, mà luôn thị hiện tất cả quyến
thuộc: Always enjoying tranquility and serenity, yet always appearing
to be in company.
8)
Rời sanh thế gian, mà chết đây sanh kia khởi hạnh Bồ Tát:
Being free from birth in the world, yet dying in one place and being reborn
in another, carrying on the activities of enlightening beings.
9)
Chẳng nhiễm tất cả pháp thế gian, mà chẳng dứt tất cả
việc làm của thế gian: Not being affected by any worldly things,
yet not stopping work in the world.
10)
yet not abandoning the vows and practices of Enlightening Beings.
(III)
Mười Đạo Phổ Nhập Của Chư Phật—Ten kinds of ways of entry
into universality of all Buddhas: Theo Kinh Hoa Nghiêm, Phẩm
33, có mười thứ Phổ nhập pháp của chư Phật—According
to the Flower Adornment Sutra, Chapter 33, there are ten kinds of ways
of entry into universality of all Buddhas.
1)
All Buddhas have immaculate bodies that penetrate past, present and future.
2)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đủ đầy ba thứ tự tại mà các
Ngài dùng để giáo hóa khắp chúng sanh—All Buddhas are endowed
with three kinds of mastery by which they edify beings everywhere:
a)
Chẩn định: Diagnosis.
b)
Trị liệu: Prescription.
c)
Huyền lực: Occult powers.
3)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ những thứ Đà La Ni, hay
khắp thọ trì tất cả Phật pháp: All Buddhas are endowed with
mnemonic powers able to receive and hold Buddha teachings.
4)
Tất cả chư Phật đều có đầy đủ bốn trí đặc biệt—All
Buddhas are endowed with four special knowledge:
a)
Lý: Principles.
b)
Nghĩa: Meaning.
c)
Sự diễn đạt: Expressions.
d)
Cách diễn thuyết trước đại chúng: Elocution.
5)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ bình đẳng đại bi, hằng
chẳng bỏ lìa tất cả chúng sanh: All Buddhas have impartial great
compassion and never abandon all sentient beings.
6)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ thậm thâm thiền định,
hằng khắp quán sát tất cả chúng sanh: All Buddhas have profound
meditation concentration and always observe all sentient beings everywhere.
7)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ thiện căn lợi tha,
điều phục chúng sanh không thôi dứt: All Buddhas have roots of
goodness beneficial to others, and civilize sentient beings unceasingly.
8)

trong khắp pháp giới: All Buddhas have unobstructed minds, able to
abide calmly in all universes.
9)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ thần lực vô ngại, một
niệm hiện khắp tam thế chư Phật: All Buddhas have unimpeded
spiritual powers and are able to manifest the Buddhas of past, present
and future in one instant.
10)
Tất cả chư Phật đều đầy đủ trí huệ vô ngại, một
niệm lập khắp tam thế kiếp: All Buddhas have unobstructed intellect,
in a single instant defining sets of ages of past, present and future.
(IV)Mười
Đạo Trang Nghiêm Của Chư Đại Bồ Tát—Ten kinds of way of
adornment of Great Enlightening Beings: Theo Kinh Hoa Nghiêm,
Đạo—According to the Flower Adornment Sutra, Chapter 38, there are
ten kinds of way of adornment of Great Enlightening Beings. Enlightening
Beings who abide by these can attain the supreme way of great adornment
of Buddhas, without leaving the Ways of Enlightening Beings.
1)
chẳng nhơn đây mà thọ sanh: Without leaving the realm of desire,
they enter the meditations, liberations, , and trances of the realms of
form and formlessness, yet they are not thereby born in those realms.
2)
Trí huệ hiện tiền nhập Thanh Văn đạo, nhưng chẳng do đạo
nầy mà chứng lấy quả xuất ly: Their knowledge appears to enter
the path of personally liberated saints, yet they do not take emancipation
by this route.
3)
Trí huệ hiện tiền nhập Bích Chi Phật đạo, mà phát khởi
đại bi chẳng thôi dứt: Their knowledge appears to enter the path
of individual illumination, yet they do not cease to generate great compassion.
4)
Dầu có quyến thuộc nhơn thiên vây quanh, trăm ngàn thể nữ
ca múa hầu hạ, mà chưa từng tạm bỏ thiền định, giải
thoát, và các tam muội: Though they have human and celestial retinues
surrounding them, hundreds and thousands of concubines and troupes of singers
and dancers, they never for a moment leave meditation, liberation, and
concentration.
5)
Tát bình đẳng tam muội: They take part in amusements and experience
pleasure and happiness with all sentient beings, but they never for a moment
leave the concentration of equanimity of Enlightening Beings.
6)
mà cũng chẳng bỏ hạnh cứu độ chúng sanh: They have already
transcended all worlds and have no attachments to anything, yet they do
not abandon efforts to liberate sentient beings.
7)
An
live by the right path, right knowledge, and right insight, yet they can
appear to enter false paths, without taking them to be true or pure, to
cause the sentient beings involved in them to abandon false principles.
8)
loài đó: They always maintain the Buddha’s pure precepts, and their
thoughts, words, and deeds are faultless, but because they want to edify
immoral sentient beings, they appear to perform the acts of ordinary ignorant
people; though they are already filled with pure virtues and abide in the
course of Enlightening Beings, yet they appear to live in such realms as
hells, animality, ghosthood, and in difficulty and poverty, in order to
enable the beings therein to gain liberation; really the Enlightening Beings
are not born in those states.
9)
vì chúng sanh mà thị hiện: Without being taught by another, they
attain unhindered intellect and the light of knowledge, are able to illumine
and understand all Buddha teachings, are sustained by the spiritual power
of all Buddhas, are one of the same body of reality with all Buddhas, accomplish
all incorruptible mystic states of clarity and purity of great people,
abide in all equal vehicles of liberation, are aware of all spheres of
Buddhahood, are endowed with the light of all worldly knowledge, and clearly
see all realms of sentient beings; they are able to be truth-knowing teachers
for sentient beings, yet they make the appearance of ceaseless search for truth; though they are actually unexcelled teachers of sentient beings,
they show respect to preceptors and religious mentors, because great enlightening
beings, by skillful expedients, abide in the path of enlightening beings,
yet manifest whatever is necessary.
10)
Đạo trang nghiêm thứ mười—The tenth way of adornment:
(a)
i)
Thiện căn đầy đủ: Their roots of goodness are sufficient.
ii)
Công hạnh rốt ráo: Their practices are completed.
iii)
Tất cả chư Như Lai cùng chung quán đảnh: They are coronated
by all Buddhas together.
iv)
Đến bỉ ngạn tất cả pháp tự tại: Reach the furthest extent
of mastery of all the teachings.
v)
Lụa pháp vô ngại dùng đội trên đầu: Their heads crowned with
the turban of the state of nonobstruction.
vi)
Thân hình đến khắp tất cả thế giới, hiện khắp thân
vô ngại của Như Lai: Their bodies reach all worlds and everywhere
they show the body of Buddha that has no resistance.
vii)
Nơi pháp tự tại rốt ráo tối thượng: Masters of the teachings,
they attain supreme fulfillment.
viii)Chuyển
pháp luân vô ngại thanh tịnh: Turn the unimpeded pure wheel of teaching.
ix)
have already accomplished all manner of freedom of enlightening beings.
(b)
quốc độ: But for the sake of sentient beings they appear to be born
in all lands.
(c)
are in the same realm as all Buddhas.
i)
Nhưng vẫn chẳng phế hạnh Bồ Tát: Yet they do not abandon the
practices of Enlightening Beings.
ii)
Chẳng bỏ pháp Bồ Tát: Yet they do not give up the principles of
Enlightening Beings.
iii)
Chẳng xao lãng nghiệp Bồ Tát: Yet they do not neglect the works
of enlightening beings.
iv)
Chẳng rời đạo Bồ Tát: Yet they do not leave the path of Enlightening
Beings.
v)
Chẳng lơi oai nghi Bồ Tát: Yet they do not slacken the conduct of
Enlightening Beings.
vi)
Chẳng dứt những chấp thủ của Bồ Tát: Yet they do not cut
off the grasping of Enlightening Beings.
vii)
Chẳng thôi phương tiện thiện xảo Bồ Tát: Yet they do not
cease the skillful methods of Enlightening Beings.
viii)Chẳng
tuyệt việc làm của Bồ Tát: Yet they do not stop doing the tasks
of enlightening beings.
ix)
Chẳng nhàm hoạt động phát triển của Bồ Tát: Yet they do
not tire of the developmental activities of Enlightening Beings.
x)
Chẳng dừng sức trụ trì của Bồ Tát: Yet they do not put an
end to sustaining power of Enlightening Beings.
(d)
Because Enlightening Beings want to quickly realize unexcelled,
complete perfect enlightenment, so they examine the ways of access to omniscience
and cultivate the practices of Enlightening Beings unceasingly.
(V)

Vô số thế giới đều thị hiện là đạo xuất sanh Phật
pháp, vì thành thục chúng sanh: Appearing in countless worlds is

Lời Phật Dạy về Đạo
The
Buddha’s Teachings of the Way
(I)
Lời Phật Dạy về Đạo trong Kinh Pháp Cú—The Buddha’s
Teachings of the Way in The Dharmapada Sutra:
1)
best of paths is the Eightfold Path. The best of truths are the Four Noble
Truths. Non-attachment is the best of states. The best of men is he who
has eyes to see (Dharmapada 273).
2)
làm theo, thì bọn ma bị rối loạn—This is the only way. There
is no other way that leads to the purity of vision. You follow this way,
Mara is helpless before it (Dharmapada 274).
3)
chông gay—Entering upon that path, you will end your suffering. The
way was taught by me when I understood the removal of thorns (arrows of
grief) (Dharmapada 275).
4)
được cỡi mở—You should make an effort by yourself! The Tathagatas
are only teachers. The Tathagatas cannot set free anyone. The meditative
ones, who enter the way, are delivered from the bonds of Mara (Dharmapada
276).
5)
Đó là Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned, or created things are transient.
One who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation.
This is the path to purity (Dharmapada 277).
6)
Đó là Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned things are suffering. One
who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation. This
is the path of purity (Dharmapada 278).
7)
Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned things are without a real self. One
who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation. This
is the path of purity (Dharmapada 279).
8)
nhác làm gì có trí để ngộ Đạo—One who does not strive when
it is time to strive, who though young and strong but slothful with thoughts
depressed; such a person never realizes the path (Dharmapada 280).
9)
Thận trọng lời nói, kềm chế ý nghĩ, thân không làm ác,
ba nghiệp thanh tịnh, là được Đạo Thánh Nhơn—Be watchful
of speech, control the mind, don’t let the body do any evil. Let purify
these three ways of action and achieve the path realized by the sages (Dharmapada
281).
10)
đã truyền dạy—Cut down the love, as though you plucked an autumn
lily with the fingers. Cultivate the path of peace. That is the Nirvana
which expounded by the Auspicious One (Dharmapada 285).
(II)
Lời Phật Dạy về Đạo trong Kinh Tứ Thập Nhị Chương—The
Buddha’s Teachings of the Way in The Forty-Two Sections Sutra:
1)
Người do ái
said: “People who cherish love and desire do not see the Way. It is just
as when you stir clear water with your hand; those who stand beside it
cannot see their reflections. People who are immersed in love and desire
have turbidity in their minds and because of it, they cannot see the Way.
You Sramanas should cast aside love and desire. When the filth of love
and desire disappears, the Way can be seen.” (Chapter 16).
2)
liền diệt, chỉ còn lại trí tuệ.”—The Buddha said: “Those
who seek the Way are like someone holding a torch when entering a dark
room, dispelling the darkness, so that only brightness remains. When you
study the Way and see the Truth, ignorance is dispelled and brightness
is always present.” (Chapter 17).
(B)
Trung Đạo
The
Middle Path
(I)
Tổng quan về Trung Đạo—An overview of the Middle Path:
1)
Trung Đạo là con đường giữa hai thái cực—Middle path is
the “mean” between two extremes: Trung Đạo là con đường giữa
đoan mà là trong trung đạo.”—The “mean” between two extremes
(between realism and nihilism, or eternal substantial existence and annihilation
or between), the idea of a realm of mind or spirit beyond the terminology
of substance (hữu) or nothing (vô); however, it includes both existence
and non-existence. Middle path is the path that Sakyamuni Buddha discovered,
which advises people to give up extremes, to keep away from bad deeds,
to do good and to purify the mind—The Eightfold Noble Path. The Buddha
taught: “When discrimination is done away with, the middle way is reached,
for the Truth does not lie in the extreme alternatives but in the middle
position.”
2)
của Đức Phật—The notion of a Middle Way is fundamental to all
nhận thức luận và thần học—The Middle Way was clearly explained
by the Madhyamika. It is not the property of the Madhyamika; however, it
was given priority by Nagarjuna and his followers, who applied it in a
singularly relentless fashion to all problems of ontology, epistemology,
and soteriology.
3) Làm việc gì cũng vừa đủ là Trung Đạo—Doing things just
moderately is the Middle Path: Phật tử chân thuần không nên đi
bắt, cũng không thể chối bỏ—Sincere Buddhists should not lean
to one side. Do not go too far, nor fail to go far enough. If you go too
far, or not far enough, it is not the Middle Way. In cultivation, sincere
Buddhists should not fall into the two extremes of emptiness and existence.
Do not be attached to true emptiness, nor be obstructed by wonderful existence,
for true emptiness and wonderful existence cannot be grasped or renounced.
Trung Đạo cũng có ý vị như là Chân Lý Tối Cao—“Madhyama” is a Sanskrit term for “Middle Way.” The “mean” between two extremes (between realism and nihilism, or eternal substantial existence and annihilation or between), the idea of a realm of mind or spirit beyond the terminology of substance (hữu) or nothing (vô); however, it includes both existence and non-existence. This doctrine attributed to Sakyamuni Buddha rejects the extremes of hedonistic self-indulgence on the one hand and extreme asceticism on the other. Sakyamuni Buddha discovered the Middle Path which advises people to give up extremes, to keep away from bad deeds, to do good and to purify the mind. The Eightfold Noble Path. The Buddha taught: “When discrimination is done away with, the middle way is reached, for the Truth does not lie in the extreme alternatives but in the middle position.” The doctrine of the Middle Path means in the first instance the middle path between the two extremes of optimism and pessimism. Such a middle position is a third extreme, tending neither one way nor the other is what the Buddha wanted to say. The Buddha certainly began with this middle as only one step higher than the ordinary extremes. A gradual ascent of the dialectical ladder, however, will bring us higher and higher until a stage is attained wherein the antithetic onesidedness of ens and non-ens is denied and transcended by an idealistic synthesis. In this case the Middle Path has a similar purport as the Highest Truth.
In the Katyayanavavade sutra, the Buddha told Maha-Kasyapa: “Kasyapa! ‘It is one extreme alternative, not is’ is another extreme alternative. That which is the madhyama position is intangible, incomparable, without any position, non-appearing, incomprehensible. That is what is meant by madhyama position. Kasyapa! It is perception of Reality.” Extremes become the dead ends of eternalism and annihilism. There are those who cling exclusively to nonbeing and there are others who cling exclusively to being. By his doctrine of Middle Way (madhyama pratipat), the Buddha meant to show the truth that things are neither absolute being nor absolute nonbeing, but are arising and perishing, forming continuous becoming, and that Reality is transcendent to thought and cannot be caught up in the dichotomies of the mind
bốn thứ Trung Đạo—According to the interpretation of Nagarjuna
Bodhisattva in the Madhyamika Sastra, right is the middle. The middle versus
two extremes is antithetic middle or relative middle. The middle after
the two extremes have been totally refuted, is the middle devoid of extremes.
When the ideas of two extremes is removed altogether, it is the absolute
middle. Thus the absolute right is the absolute middle. When the absolute
middle condescends to lead people at large, it becomes a temporary middle
or truth. Also according to Nagarjuna Bodhisattva, we have thus the fourfold
Middle Path.
1)
coi như tục đế và vô là chân đế—When the theory of being
is opposed to the theory of non-being, the former is regarded as the worldly
truth and the latter the higher truth.
2)
Tục Hữu Không: Chân Phi Hữu Phi Không. Khi hữu và vô đối
lập với phi hữu phi vô, thì hữu vô là tục đế và phi hữu
phi vô là chân đế—When the theory of being and non-being are opposed
to those of neither being nor non-being, the former are regarded as the
worldly truth and the latter the higher truth.
3)
là chân đế—If the four opposed theories just mentioned together
become the worldly truth, the yet higher views dening them all will be
regarded as the higher truth.
4)
the expressed in the last stage become the worldly truth, the denial of
them all will be the higher truth.

bị tuyệt diệt—Middle School (the same as ten negations except the
last pair). In the Eight Negations, all specific features of becoming are
denied. The fact that there are just eight negations has no specific purport;
this is meant to be a whole negation. It may be taken as a crosswise sweeping away of all eight errors attached to the world of becoming, or a reciprocal rejection of the four pairs of one-sided views, or a lengthwise general
thrusting aside of the errors one after the other. In this way, all discriminations
of oneself and another or this and that are done away with.
(A)
Cách giải thích đầu—The first explanations:
nothing appears, nothing disappears, meaning there is neither origination
nor cessation; refuting the idea of appearing or birth by the idea of disappearance.
về ‘thường’ bằng ‘đoạn.’—There nothing has an end,
nothing is eternal, meaning neither permanence nor impermanence; refuting
the idea of ‘permanence’ by the idea of ‘destruction.’
bằng ‘dị.’—Nothing is identical with itself, nor is there anything
differentiated, meaning neither unity nor diversity; refuting the idea
of ‘unity’ by the idea of ‘diversity.’
comes, nothing goes, refuting the idea of ‘disappearance’ by the idea
of ‘come,’ meaning neither coming-in nor going-out; refuting
the idea of ‘come’ by the idea of ‘go.’
(B)
Cách giải thích thứ nhì—The second explanations:
1)
Không thủ tiêu: Nirodha—No elimination.
2)
Không sinh: No produce.
3)
Không diệt: No destruction.
4)
Không vĩnh hằng: No eternity.
5)
Không thống nhất: No unity—Not one.
6)
Không đa dạng: No manifoldness—Not many.
7)
Không đến: No arriving—Not coming.
8)
Không đi: No departure—Not going.
Chính cái “chân không” này mới là bản tính tối hậu của mọi hiện hữu—When we hear about the non-self-existence and the illusory nature of all phenomena including the “I”, we might conclude that ourselves, others, the world and enlightenment are totally non-exixtent. Such a conclusion is nihilistic and too extreme. According to the Buddha all phenomena do exist. It is their apparently concrete and independent manner of existence that is mistaken and must be rejected. We should always remember that all existent phenomena are mere appearances and lacking concrete self-existence they come into being from the interplay of various causes and conditions. They arise, abide, change and disappear. All of them are constantly subject to change. This is true of ourselves as well. No matter what our innate sense of ego-grasping may believe, there is no solid inherent “I” to be found anywhere inside or outside our everchanging body and mind (mental and physical components). We and all other phenomena without exception are empty of even the smallest atom of self-existence, and it is this emptiness that is the ultimate nature of everything that exists.
He was not satisfied with the ideas of his contemporary thinkers. Those who regard this earthly life as pleasant or optimists are ignorant of the disappointment and despair which are to come. Those who regard this life as a life of suffering or pessimists may be tolerated as long as they are simply feeling dissatisfied with this life, but when they begin to give up this life as hopeless and try to escape to a better life by practicing austerities or self-mortifications, then they are to be abhorred. The Buddha taught that the extremes of both hedonism and asceticism are to be avoided and that the middle course should be followed as the ideal. This does not mean that one should simply avoid both extremes and take the middle course as the only remaining course of escape. Rather, one should transcend, not merely escape from such extremes.
Và cuối cùng đạt được trí tuệ có năng lực nhận thức thấu đáo mọi khía cạnh chân thật của vạn hữu—The enlightened one is the person who has really attained enlightenment, or one who attains a way of life that is in accord with the truth. His thought and conduct are naturally fit for the purpose. He can also choose a way of life that is always in harmony with everything in the world. Thus according to the definition of “enlightenment,” it is impossible for us to find the “right” or “middle” path simply by choosing the midpoint between two extremes. Each extreme represents a fundamental difference. If we conduct ourselves based on the truth of causation, without adhering to fixed ideas, we can always lead a life that is perfectly fit for its purpose, and one that is in harmony with the truth. This is the teaching of the Middle Path. How can we attain such a mental state? The teaching in which the Buddha shows us concretely how to attain this in our daily life is non other than the doctrine of the Eightfold Noble Path. An enlightened one is the one who looks at things rightly (right view), thinks about things rightly (right thinking), speaks the right words (right speech), performs right conduct (right action), leads a right human life (right living), endeavors to live rightly (right endeavor), constantly aims the mind in the right direction (right memory), and constantly keeps the right mind and never be agitated by anything (right meditation). An Enlightened One always renders service to others in all spheres, spiritual, material, and physical, is donation. To remove illusion from one’s own mind in accordance the precepts taught by the Buddha, leading a right life and gaining the power to save others by endeavoring to perfect oneself, enduring any difficulty and maintaining a tranquil mind without arrogance even at the height of prosperity, is perseverance. To proceed straight toward an important goal without being sidetracked by trivial things is assiduity. To maintain a cool and un-agitated mind under all circumstances is meditation. And eventually to have the power of discerning the real aspect of all things is wisdom—See Eight Noble Paths in Chapter 20 and Six Paramitas in Chapter 27.
Phật Ngôn:
Người nào xem thế gian nầy như bọt nước, như ảo ảnh thì sẽ chấm dứt mọi đau khổ và chẳng còn sợ thần chết kéo lôi—Look upon the world as one would look upon a bubble, just as one would look upon a mirage. If a man thus looks down upon the world, the king of death does not see him (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 170).
Giả sử thế gian nầy có được trang hoàng lộng lẫy như chiếc xe của vua đi nữa, thì trong số người đến xem, chỉ người ngu mới tham đắm, chứ kẻ trí nào hề bận tâm—Supposed this world is like a brilliantly ornamented royal chariot; the foolish are immersed in it, but the wise do not attach to it (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 171).
Người nào trước buông lung sau lại tinh tấn, người đó là ánh sáng chiếu cõi thế gian như vầng trăng ra khỏi mây mù—Whoever was formerly heedless and afterwards overcomes his sloth; such a person illuminates this world just like the moon when freed from clouds (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 172).
Người nào trước làm ác sau lại làm lành, người đó là ánh sáng chiếu cõi thế gian như vầng trăng ra khỏi mây mù—Whoever was formerly heedless and afterwards does good deeds; such a person illuminates this world just like the moon when freed from clouds (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 173).
Như chim thoát khỏi lưới, chẳng mấy con bay thẳng lên trời cao, trong thế gian nầy mù mịt chẳng mấy người sáng suốt trông thấy cao xa—This work is so dark that only a few can see it clearly, like birds escape from a net but very few of them fly up straight (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 174).
Con thiên nga chỉ bay được giữa không trung, người có thần thông chỉ bay được khỏi mặt đất, duy bậc đại trí, trừ hết ma quân mới bay được khỏi thế gian nầy—Swans can only fly in the sky, man who has supernatural powers can only go through air by their psychic powers. The wise rise beyond the world when they have conquered all kinds of Mara (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 175).
Những ai vi phạm đạo Nhất thừa, những ai ưa nói lời vọng ngữ, những ai không tin tưởng đời sau, thì chẳng có điều ác nào mà họ không làm được—Those who have transgressed the One Vehicle Law (the law of truthfulness), who tell lie, who don’t believe in the law of cause and effect, there is no evil that they will not do (Kinh Pháp Cú—The Dammapada Sutta 176).
